Expect to see some changes to your Google Play app in the coming days, if they haven’t hit your phone already. Google is rolling out an update that features a tab tailored to your interests, guided search, enhanced gaming, and new ways to keep up with your stats.
The features will launch in countries where the Play Points Program is available this week, and in additional countries beginning Oct. 1. Here’s what you can look forward to with the latest Google Play update.
A more personalized experience
It’s a new You
Much of the Google Play update is intended to create a more personal experience. Upgrades to the Apps tab, for example, will “spotlight timely topics tailored to your interests” at the top of the app.
Meanwhile, the new You tab will serve as a “home base with curated content,” where users can keep track of subscriptions, stats, recommendations, and more. You’ll also be able to view your new gamer profile from the You tab.
That’s right, a platform-level gaming profile is coming to Google Play. It’s primarily a hub for keeping track of game stats and unlocked achievements, but it also allows for personalization using an AI-generated avatar. Speaking of gaming…
A more rewarding gaming experience
Introducing Play Games League and Sidekick
Gaming comes with its own rewards but Google is upping them with Play Points, which can be traded in for merch and real-world experiences.
Play Games Leagues allows Play community users to compete in gaming events with the opportunity to earn Play Points. Subway Surfers kicks off the first Play Games League event, which runs from Oct. 10 to Oct. 23. The event’s top-performing gamers could be rewarded with 2 to 5,000 Play Points.
If the challenging or competitive play is a bit overwhelming, Google Play Sidekick may come in handy. The new feature provides direct access to Gemini Live for access to tips and tricks without having to leave a game (provided that you downloaded the game in Play).
Google Play Games on PC will transition from beta to general availability in tandem with the release of the Google Play update. We were impressed with Google Play Games initially, so it’s nice to see the availability open up to all.
