Google is no stranger when it comes to making changes to improve its flagship gallery app. Not only did the app gain a native text-to-video generator early in September, it’s also experimenting with widening the AI tool’s capabilities.

Elsewhere, previously Pixel 10-exclusive functionality like Gemini-powered conversational photo editing is also now generally available, marking upgrades for all US Android users.

Elsewhere, earlier this year, we also saw Google aggressively redesign the Photos app’s editor UI, and it looks like more changes, specifically for the video editor, could soon be inbound.

The development was brought to light by the folks over at Android Authority after digging through version 7.49 of the Google Photos app for Android. According to the report, the media storage app could soon offer new ways to edit video content, including new text options that look like they were picked right out of Instagram.

For reference, Google Photos’ video editor currently only lets users select one default font for their text overlay needs, paired with a slightly more generous color wheel consisting of seven options. This is precisely what the tech giant intends to change with a forthcoming upgrade.

Bringing the fun to functional

Current, current, upcoming, upcoming

The current implementation is functional, but it’s clearly not fun. With the forthcoming editor update, that will be less of a concern as users will be able to play around with different font styles, more color options, the option to add a background bar to your text for more contrast and full control over text alignment.

It’s worth noting that the editor UI seen above is still a work in progress, with no clear timeline for release. It is currently unclear if and when the feature will roll out widely.
