Google Photos is getting a fun new feature — but only on iOS for now. As reported by Android Authority, at least one iPhone Google Photos user recently gained the ability to create stickers from images in just a couple of taps, a feature that isn’t currently available on the Android version of the app.
According to a tipster AA identifies as Telegram user AdanBR, the iOS version of Google Photos now lets you create stickers from your pictures by simply holding your finger down on the subject of a photo. The app automatically cuts the subject out from the background, presenting options to copy the sticker to your clipboard or share it.
A screenshot and a screen recording of the feature in action supplied to Android Authority by AdanBR shows Photos clipping two cats out of two separate images. The feature presumably works on people and other pets in images, too, and may work on other objects as well. Text in the Google Photos app explaining the new functionality says it works on the “subject” of the photo, but doesn’t elaborate.
An iOS exclusive (for now)
While this isn’t currently an option in Google Photos on Android, you can create similar stickers inside Google Messages by using that app’s photomoji feature. Even so, the ability to create these stickers straight from your Google Photos camera roll seems significantly more convenient.
Google has a tendency to test new features for its apps on iOS before implementing them on Android, but it’s rare for any Google app functionality to remain iOS-exclusive. I’d expect similar functionality to crop up in the Android version of Google Photos sooner than later.
