Creating collages in Google Photos used to be frustrating. You’d pick your photos, realize the layout was all wrong, and have to start from scratch. It was a clunky process that often stifled creativity. But that’s all in the past, as Google has rolled out a massive update to its collage creator.

The new version focuses on editing flexibility. You can add or remove images without starting over, change templates while working, and preview layouts before deciding. The old system was rigid. Once you have picked your photos, you cannot make changes without starting again. It was enough to make you give up and just share a boring grid of photos.

Now, you have the freedom to experiment. Google Photos‘ new editor allows you to add or remove photos and switch between different layouts on the fly, all without losing your progress. This means you can play around with different combinations until you find the perfect arrangement.

Google confirmed the update on its support forum, aiming to fix long-standing issues. One of the most practical additions is the ability to switch layouts after inserting photos, without losing your placements or edits. You can also adjust your photo set as you go by adding, removing, or rearranging images.

The collage editor now has a built-in share button, so you can send your work directly to social apps without saving and leaving the app. Google is also updating the template catalog with modern layouts, event themes, and a cleaner look. The editor now offers a ‘Getting started’ prompt and an option for feedback in the menu, making it easier for users to get started and share their thoughts.

A unified creative hub

The timing connects with Google’s broader strategy to centralize creative tools. Since mid-2025, Photos has been introducing a Create tab, a hub for collages, animations, highlight videos, and AI-based tools. That means your collage editor is now part of a larger ecosystem where you can jump from one creative mode to another.

To try the new features, pick at least two photos, then tap the Create button and choose Collage. If the revamped interface doesn’t show yet, it may not have rolled out in your region.
