For the casual Gemini Live user, the conversation experience with the AI tool is often a smooth one. However, if you frequent Gemini Live, you’ll know that the AI tool’s conversational flow has one major flaw: the tool’s tendency to interrupt and susceptibility to being interrupted.
Google understands that the AI tool’s eagerness to jump in when you’re taking a pause, or its tendency to hear random sounds and perceive them as you interrupting it, can be annoying. That’s precisely why the tech giant is rolling out some much-needed upgrades.
There are two main upgrades. Let’s start with the one that functions behind the scenes.
Rolling out on the Gemini app on Android, Gemini Live is now less likely to cut you off mid-sentence “if you pause too long.” The development was highlighted by Google and Gemini VP Josh Woodward on X, via 9to5Google, who also added that the same functionality should make its way to the Gemini app on iOS in 2026.
A simple solution to interruption
In similar vein, Google also wants to prevent random sounds from interrupting Gemini Live when it is speaking out its response. Instead of implementing a sophisticated backend tweak to detect and filter out ambient speech, Gemini Live is opting for a much more reliable alternative: a mute button!
As seen in the embedded tweet above, the mute button replaces the hold button.
I’m on the latest Google app version 16.49.61 and the new mute button is not available for me. On the other hand, the folks over 9to5Google suggest that the new button is available with the latest Google app build, suggesting a server-side phased rollout for the new features.
Is this an important Gemini Live development in your opinion? Let us know in the comments below!
