Earlier this year, in March, to be specific, Google rolled out a solid new upgrade to its suite of virtual try-on features.
The feature, which has long allowed users to try out what specific clothes would look like on their body type, finally expanded beyond simple clothing and into the realm of makeup in March — allowing users to visualize what specific makeup types would look like on their face.
That is now serving as the bedrock for Google Meet’s latest feature, which essentially gives you access to a virtual vanity mirror for your video conferencing needs.
Bringing the concept of ‘getting ready’ into the digital landscape, and building on top of the ‘Touch-up‘ feature introduced in 2023, Google Meet is now rolling out AI-powered makeup on both mobile and the web.
More than just a filter
The new makeup options are listed in the ‘Appearance’ section of the Google Meet app, right underneath ‘Portrait touch-up,’ with a total of 12 distinct options to choose from. More importantly, Google says that your virtual makeup will remain intact, regardless of your on-screen movement, which can also be seen in the short GIF above. This should help the AI-powered look appear more natural, instead of looking like a plain filter.
Your AI-powered makeup remains seamless and untouched—even through everyday movements like sipping your coffee or touching your face.
AI-powered makeup for Google Meet started rolling out on October 8 and is expected to be widely available before October 25 to Google Workspace Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Starter, Standard, and Plus, Education Plus, Teaching & Learning add-on, Enterprise Essentials, and Google One subscribers.
Google added that the feature will be off by default, and can be turned on by the user before or during a video call. Additionally, once a makeup look has been applied, Google Meet will save your preferences for your next meeting, so you might just want to be a little careful when hopping from a casual meeting to a more professional one.
