If you receive a lot of app notifications from one day to the next, then perhaps you feel like looking at something a bit more aesthetically pleasing than a plethora of red icon badges randomly dispersed across your Home screen.
If you can relate, then you might take a liking to a free jailbreak tweak called Goodges 2 by iOS developer NoisyFlake. This tweak replaces those tiny red atrocities with dynamic app icon labels that notate precisely how many missed notifications you have for all relevant apps.
As you’ll notice in the screenshot examples above, Goodges 2
is substantially mellower on the eyes and supplements even the most minimalist
of themes. Best of all, the tweak is fully-customizable, permitting you to change
app icon label behavior and colorize everything to your own personal standards.
After you install Goodges 2, you’ll find a dedicated
preference pane in the Settings app where you can configure it to your liking:
Here, you can:
- Toggle Goodges 2 on or off on demand
- Hide notification badges in place of Goodges 2 on the Home screen
- Hide app icon labels (only displays notification labels) on the Home screen
- Hide notification badges in place of Goodges 2 on the Dock
- Hide app icon labels (only displays notification labels) on the Dock
- Colorize app icon labels
- Choose a custom color
- Colorize based on the dominant color of the app icon
- Configure app-specific missed notification texts
- Display numbers only
- Capitalize the first letter of the texts

In the App Specific Texts pane, you’ll find a list of
installed apps where you can configure custom notification texts for individual
apps:
Tapping on those apps brings up another configuration pane,
which we’ve embedded below:
Here, you can:
- Toggle custom app specific texts on or off for
individual apps - Select a custom singular form notification text
- Select a custom plural form notification text
The developer includes a respring button at the top right of
the preference pane that you’ll want to use every time you make changes to the
preference pane. Using this button ensures that your changes are saved and that
they take effect.
While we absolutely love the colorization options, we’re also huge fans of being able to customize the text on a per-app basis. For example, you can say “X Messages” as missed notifications text for the Messages app, or “X Emails” for missed notifications in the Mail app, etc.
