Motorola has spent years trying to convince people it still makes phones worth buying, and in the second quarter of this year, it’s got the proof. According to new data from Counterpoint Research and published on 9to5Google, Motorola not only crushed expectations in foldable shipments but also cemented itself as the number two smartphone brand in the US. And it’s due entirely to the excellent Razr 2025 flip phone.

What’s old is new again

RAZR flip phones are definitely both

Globally, Huawei topped the foldable charts with a commanding 45% share, thanks mostly to sales in China. The real shocker came just behind it: Motorola grabbed 28% of the market, doubling its share from just 14% a year ago. Samsung, once the undisputed leader in foldables, slipped to a distant third at 9%.

It’s worth stressing that this report reflects the quarter before Samsung’s new Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 launched. Samsung has already ramped up production to meet high demand, and the third quarter’s numbers will almost certainly look different, but Motorola’s strategy is nevertheless working.

The Razr 2025 lineup hit shelves in April, and its timing couldn’t have been better. With a $699 starting price — often dipping to $600 on sale — it undercut every other foldable on the US market. That includes Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE, which costs $200 more despite looking a lot like last year’s Flip 6. Motorola’s clamshell doesn’t just win on price, though.

For two generations, Motorola has shipped the Razr with a full-cover display that can handle just about anything you’d do on the main screen. Samsung, meanwhile, only this year decided to move past the “postage stamp” cover display it carried over for far too long. The result? Motorola has the momentum in the flip space, with a device that feels modern and useful right out of the box.

Counterpoint credits the Razr with helping push US foldable shipments to their highest-ever levels for a second quarter. It’s a halo product that elevates Motorola’s entire lineup, showing the company can compete on design and experience—not just aggressive midrange pricing.
