One of the best use cases of modern fitness and health tracking devices is the ability to not only measure your workouts, calories, and steps, but also how well you’ve slept. And while we think you should give up on sleep tracking entirely, it remains one of the major reasons people buy new fitness devices.

Now, just in time for the Google Pixel Watch 4’s release, Fitbit has rolled out an under-the-hood quality-of-life update for the Fitbit app that brings notable improvements to sleep tracking.

As spotted by 9to5Google, Fitbit has published a new page detailing changes to its sleep-tracking technology. The company says the app now provides a “more precise measurement” of your sleep stages.

Sleep stage data on Fitbit is more trustworthy now

The new system, according to Fitbit, can track “brief awakenings [that] the old system missed.” This means users might now see slightly increased wake times compared to before. That, in turn, may impact the breakdown of sleep stages and overall sleep duration.

Users on Fitbit’s community forums and Reddit had already started noticing a difference in how sleep was being tracked — and it turns out, they were right. Fitbit has now confirmed the changes.

The company says the updated data offers a “more accurate reflection of your night’s rest” and helps users better understand “how your body is recovering” each night.

Fitbit also notes this is just the beginning — describing the update as “one of the first” in a series of sleep-tracking improvements. While there’s no official word yet, we expect more fitness and recovery-related updates to be announced at the upcoming Made by Google event in just a few weeks.
