Most DDoS defences are just too slow in times when even your grandma can launch one for the price of a sandwich at peaks of 1 Tbps.
Even worse, most of these outdated DDoS mitigation solutions react only after the damage is done, leaving almost every organisation vulnerable, from small online shops to national infrastructure.
In this exclusive interview with Safety Detectives, Pavel Odintsov, Co-Founder of FastNetMon, shares why legacy DDoS tools are failing, and how his team managed to build a faster, leaner alternative that detects attacks and stops in seconds.
We’re talking enterprise-grade protection available to everyone, no matter their size or resources, which is already protecting companies in over 180 countries
If your business needs to stay online, this is a conversation you need to have with your team.
From Open Source to Industry Standard: The Origin of FastNetMon
FastNetMon began as an open-source project with a simple goal: to make fast, effective DDoS defence accessible to everyone. We launched the company after realising that traditional solutions were too slow and inflexible to handle today’s fast-evolving, frequent attacks, especially for smaller or mid-sized organisations.
Today, our platform protects networks in over 180 countries and is trusted by some of the world’s largest providers.
Fast and effective DDoS defence should be available to all sizes and shapes of organisations. That’s exactly why FastNetMon began as an open-source project.
We built the product to solve a problem we faced ourselves: traditional DDoS detection and mitigation tools were too slow, rigid, and resource-heavy to handle the increasingly frequent attacks seen in modern networks. We saw that networks were often taken down with a DDoS attack before administrators even realised something was wrong.
We knew there had to be a better way. One that prioritised speed, automation, and simplicity.
That’s why we created FastNetMon: to deliver lightning-fast DDoS detection in seconds, with automated mitigation and lightweight deployment, so organisations of all sizes can defend their networks against DDoS.
Today, FastNetMon serves companies in over 180 countries, with some of the world’s largest networks relying on our products to keep their infrastructures safe. What started as a small open-source project has grown into a household name in the DDoS defence industry, trusted by thousands of organisations to provide rapid, reliable protection in an ever-evolving DDoS threat landscape.
DDoS Has Evolved—And So Have the Stakes
DDoS attacks are growing rapidly in both frequency and intensity. Recent industry reports show a sharp rise in large-scale attacks, with many now exceeding several Tbps in volume and occurring daily across the globe. Compared to the previous year, network-layer attacks have more than doubled, and the average size of botnets used in these attacks has increased sixfold, making them harder to detect and block in time.
What makes the situation even more urgent is the rise of DDoS-for-hire platforms, also known as “booter” or “stresser” services. These allow anyone with no technical skills or infrastructure to launch powerful DDoS attacks for just a few dollars. This has dramatically lowered the barrier to entry, making DDoS a weapon that’s now accessible to disgruntled gamers, activists, or even competitors.
Every organisation is now a potential target, and relying on manual or slow defences is simply no longer enough.
Why DDoS Still Catches Organisations Off Guard?
DDoS attacks affect a wide range of organisations, from internet service providers and hosting companies to banks, e-commerce platforms, government services, and gaming networks. Virtually any business that relies on being online is a potential target. But it’s not just companies that suffer—consumers feel the impact too. When a banking app goes down, a streaming service freezes, or an online store becomes unreachable, it’s often the result of a DDoS attack disrupting the infrastructure behind the scenes.
Despite how common these attacks have become, many organisations still struggle with outdated or slow defence systems. Traditional DDoS protection often relies on manual intervention, generic thresholds, or third-party services that only kick in after damage has already begun. Meanwhile, attackers have grown faster, more distributed, and more sophisticated—often overwhelming defences in seconds.
A Widespread Threat Meets Outdated Defences
DDoS attacks impact a wide range of organisations, but some sectors are particularly vulnerable. First, they hit especially hard in industries where uptime is absolutely critical — such as internet service providers (ISPs), telecom operators, internet exchange points (IXPs), cloud platforms, and hosting providers. These organisations form the backbone of the internet, and when their infrastructure is under attack, the ripple effect can disrupt businesses, users, and entire digital ecosystems.
The second category includes companies that depend on constant availability to serve their customers. E-commerce platforms, online gaming services, streaming media providers, and SaaS tools all rely on uninterrupted access. For these businesses, even a few minutes of downtime can lead to lost revenue, user frustration, and brand damage.
The third group includes government agencies and essential public services, which are often targeted by politically motivated hacktivist groups. This includes government portals, banks, transportation networks, and energy infrastructure. These services are vital to society, and when they’re taken offline, the consequences can be wide-reaching, affecting not just operations but public trust.
Despite how widespread and damaging DDoS attacks have become, many organisations are still stuck with outdated defences. Traditional solutions are often slow to respond, rely on manual processes, or are built for attack patterns that no longer reflect today’s threat landscape.
Why Are Network Operators Switching to FastNetMon?
FastNetMon’s journey from open source project to trusted global solution is best reflected in the stories of the teams who rely on it every day to keep their networks secure and stable.
One network operator shared how, before FastNetMon, they experienced weekly outages due to recurring DDoS attacks. After deploying our solution, they not only achieved 100% detection accuracy but also eliminated downtime entirely—transforming a constant operational headache into a silent non-issue. Another described how they were able to get full protection up and running on a minimal setup—just a single CPU core and 4GB of RAM—monitoring nearly 1,000 subnets in real time. That kind of efficiency is rare in the world of DDoS defence.
A recurring theme across our user base is speed. One customer recounted a real-world attack scenario where FastNetMon, integrated with BGP FlowSpec, detected the threat in under three seconds and fully mitigated it just one second later. Total time from detection to resolution: four seconds. That’s the kind of performance that not only prevents damage but also protects customer trust.
FastNetMon is one of the fastest DDoS detection engines on the market today. It can process sFlow and mirror traffic in under two seconds, and NetFlow or IPFIX in around 30 seconds—all while automating alerts and mitigation actions. This speed and reliability are why so many providers trust us to keep their services running, even under pressure.
The real milestone for us isn’t just a number—it’s knowing that network engineers around the world can sleep better at night because their networks are protected, even when they’re under attack.
What’s the BIG vision for the future of your company? What’s in your roadmap, and how will these updates improve your clients’ lives?
Our vision is to make DDoS a non-issue—for everyone. We want to live in a world where any organisation, regardless of size or resources, can access fast, scalable, and affordable protection that simply works. DDoS attacks shouldn’t be a daily worry or a business risk—they should be just another solved problem in the background of a secure, resilient internet.
To get there, we’re building solutions that scale from small providers to global networks, with minimal hardware, lightning-fast detection, and seamless automation. We’re also continuously evolving our platform to integrate advanced telemetry, real-time analytics, and smarter mitigation strategies, so that defence is not just faster—but also more adaptive and intelligent.
Closing Thoughts on the Current State of DDoS Defence
DDoS is no longer a fringe threat. It’s a serious, growing global concern that affects businesses, governments, and everyday users alike.
But the good news is that it’s not a hopeless battle.
Behind the scenes, there are people and companies working tirelessly to build faster, smarter, and more accessible defences.
At FastNetMon, we’re proud to be part of that effort, making sure that organisations everywhere can stay online, stay secure, and stay focused on what they do best.
