In the last decade, home security cameras have become highly accessible and relatively easy to set up. Thankfully, technologies have improved to make DIY security products that offer clear video, excellent night vision, long battery life, and useful AI, helping us feel more at ease whether at home or away.

One of the brands offering some of the best security cameras is Eufy. The new Eufy 4K NVR Security Camera System S4 Max is the pinnacle of these efforts, and it delivers.

What I like about the Eufy 4K NVR Security Camera System S4 Max

Never miss a thing

Eufy S4 Max camera mounted on roof soffet

Eufy is a sub-brand of Anker and has been making some of my favorite security cameras. The company offers a wide range of products from entry-level to pseudo-professional grade, like the new 4K NVR Security Camera System S4 Max.

If you’re unsure what makes an NVR system different from using any other security camera, it is that all of your compatible cameras connect directly to the network video recorder. This creates a central location for storing all recordings for future reference. While Eufy has other hubs that can connect to your cameras, like the one for the EufyCam S3 Pro, it’s been beefed up for its latest system.

At the center of this system is the NVR, which features 2TB of built-in storage and can be expanded up to 16TB. When the storage space becomes full, the system will automatically begin deleting old recordings. Be sure to remove these if you want to ensure they are saved. The amount that can be stored will depend on your settings and what is saved. Aside from the built-in storage, the NVR can also be the control center for reviewing and managing your cameras. Connect a monitor or TV to the NVR using the included HDMI cable, and use the supplied USB mouse to view your entire system.

I like this expanded ability to manage your system without needing to do everything from the app. This means that anyone in the family, assuming they have the login info, can easily see what’s going on around the house from the four included cameras.

The local AI agent helps to manage videos and examine the contents to provide you with more precise alerts. Whether you want to be notified of all movement, vehicles, people, animals, recognized people, or a combination of those, the NVR can do it.

The AI also aids in cross-camera tracking. This means that when motion is detected by one camera and the object continues to move around the space, other cameras will pick it up and create a seamless video monitor across multiple cameras. The AI also makes finding videos you want easy with contextual search. You can search for a black dog, red truck, or whatever else you need, and the NVR system will search and give all videos matching your description. It works relatively well, and I assume it will only get better.

Out of the box, the NVR can handle eight cameras, but is expandable to 16. Currently, the NVR only works with PoE wired cameras, but a Wi-Fi module is in the works to allow it to work with non-wired Eufy cameras. The included S4 Max cameras offer a 4K 120-degree FOV fixed lens and a panning module with two more lenses.

Installation is relatively simple, assuming your home is set up for Ethernet, my old farmhouse is very much not. Because this system doesn’t work via Wi-Fi, you have to use Ethernet to connect everything. I wanted to avoid putting too many holes in my home to get the process started. So, I made one hole and used a PoE Switch to then run the included 18m (about 59 feet) of cable. Aside from running the cables, the install is simple as you use the included mounting brackets and hardware, then plug in the cables to the camera and NVR.

The PTZ camera features a 70-degree vertical range and 360-degree horizontal rotation. There are built-in LED spotlights to help with night vision, which have black and white IR, color night vision, and Eufy’s Starlight Color Night Vision. This all works very well, offering clear images in all lighting conditions.

What I don’t like about the Eufy 4K NVR Security Camera System S4 Max

No dealbreakers here

I have very few issues with the Eufy 4K NVR Security Camera System S4 Max in its current iteration. But most of those issues could recede with software updates. My biggest complaint from the start is that it only works with PoE cameras. I live in an old farm home in the country where internet isn’t the most reliable or fast. A PoE system should help with connectivity issues, but when your home isn’t set up for Ethernet, it can be an issue. It also means that none of the Wi-Fi Eufy cameras I already have can work with the NVR. Hopefully, the upcoming Wi-Fi module opens this up.

I was able to get the system up and running with some effort and money on my part by using an outdoor PoE switch. I ran a single wire out from the NVR and then split it outside to connect the other cameras. This saved me from having to put more holes in my home than I wanted.

While this connection method results in faster camera response and monitoring, it also means I receive speedy notifications. Yes, this is a good thing, but the notification management on this system seems different from the other cameras I use from Eufy. I’m still figuring out how to set up notifications effectively. So, it would be nice for this portion to be cleaned up.

The last thing I want to mention is a surprising omission from Eufy: the 4K NVR Security Camera System S4 Max doesn’t work with the new Eufy Smart Display E10. This is a purpose-built device designed to monitor Eufy security cameras. An 8-inch tablet with a built-in battery is the perfect companion for the NVR system. Unfortunately, there is no ETA as to when, or if, support will be added.

Should you buy it?

Eufy 4K S4 Max camera tracking

For whole-home security that is fast, packed with features, yet easy to use, this is what you’re looking for — yes, you should buy it. The Eufy 4K NVR Security Camera System S4 Max is a comprehensive, all-in-one home security system that provides excellent coverage of your property, utilizing helpful AI to filter out unnecessary events and only display what you want to see. The S4 Max cameras are fantastic, offering excellent image quality, good sound for two-way communication, tracking ability, and more.

It is a pricey proposal at $1,300; even the $1,000 options aren’t cheap. But considering you get four excellent cameras, a 2TB storage base, and local AI to help manage and monitor your property, it’s not terrible if you need it. Sure, you can do similar things with individual cameras, but it will take a bit more effort and won’t have the processing power you’ll get from the NVR.

Although you can’t use Wi-Fi cameras with it yet, the notifications are a bit wonky, and it doesn’t work with the E10 display. However, it does work with Amazon Alexa and Google Home. This means you can turn your TV into a smart home hub to monitor your cameras until support is added for Eufy’s own display.
