CarMovie app for TrollStore unlocks video playback capabilities via CarPlay

Among the many things that aren’t allowed on CarPlay-capable head units is watching videos, and for valid reasons. After all, car manufacturers don’t want to offer this feature as it may entice some individuals to pay more attention to a screen in front of their face while driving than the actual road they’re driving on.

But there are plenty of situations in which watching a video on your CarPlay-capable head unit would be completely fine, such as when you’re parked in a parking lot or sleeping in your car. For these reasons, a new TrollStore-compatible app called CarMovie by iOS developer Dcsyhi (@linux_n1) can unlock video playback on your CarPlay-capable head unit.

After you perma-sign the CarMovie app on your iOS device, you can launch it to see a list of added videos. You will need to add the video yourself using the “+” button at the top-right of the app, and you can manage any previously added video(s) with the “Edit” button at the top-left of the app:

The same list of videos appears on your CarPlay-capable head unit, allowing you to interact with videos that you’ve added in the app directly from the head unit:

Videos that you play take up the full screen, like so:

Because CarMovie takes advantage of TrollStore, it doesn’t require a jailbreak and it supports most firmware that TrollStore supports, including various subsets of iOS 15, iOS 16, and iOS 17. The general rule of thumb to use here is that if you can install TrollStore on your iPhone, then you can install CarMovie and expect to use it. Best of all, TrollStore perma-signs the app, so you don’t need to re-sign it as you would with sideloading.

Those interested in seeing how the app works are encouraged to check out the developer’s demonstration videos that have been shared to X (formerly Twitter).

The CarMovie app is available via the developer’s GitHub page as an .ipa file that you can perma-sign with TrollStore.
