Google officially introduced Calling Cards to the Phone by Google app last month, although we’ve known about the feature’s development since late June. Calling Cards are now on the verge of getting another key update that would significantly enhance the customization of your contacts’ appearance.

The Phone by Google app version 192.0.806919635 (beta) introduces a new font customization tool in the Calling Cards editor interface, according to Android Authority. In its current form, users can choose from a wide selection of fonts and colors. However, with an upcoming update, the Phone app may offer an additional option to customize the font more extensively.

Taking customization to a new level

As you can see in the screenshot above, the horizontal row of fonts will gain a new option, clearly marked with a slider in the icon. This option is hard to miss as it will be the first entry in the icons row when the feature goes live. Tapping this newly added option will display sliders for Width, Weight, and Roundness, along with a real-time preview of the changes.

Ideally, users would be able to choose any font from the row and customize it with these sliders. However, that doesn’t appear to be the case right now, with Android Authority pointing out that this new tool uses the familiar Google Sans Flex font.

I tried manually sideloading the aforementioned version 192.0.806919635 beta, but couldn’t find this new customization option. I also tried updating to the latest beta release of the Phone by Google app (version 193.0.809761572), which has removed Calling Cards entirely from the Phone app’s Settings page.

This suggests that Google is only testing these changes on a specific beta version of the Phone app and is likely rolling them out to a limited set of users. But considering the amount of work that has gone into this particular addition to Calling Cards, we’d be surprised if it didn’t see a broader rollout. However, we don’t have a date to mark on our calendars just yet.

When (or if) this feature ever goes live, it would certainly give Android’s Calling Cards an edge over Apple’s version of the same feature on iPhones (known as Contact Posters), which doesn’t offer this level of customization.

What do you make of these upcoming changes to the Phone by Google app?
