Much like Android phones, Chromebooks come in a variety of form factors and sizes, and are available with different performance capabilities at varying price points, ensuring that there is a perfect device for you. If you’re looking for a portable and, more importantly, a versatile computing experience, then you should be taking a hard look at a 2-in-1 device. These devices open up a world of possibilities, allowing you to use them as a traditional laptop or a ChromeOS tablet.

2-in-1 laptops come in two distinct variations, either allowing you to fold the keyboard behind the display or letting you remove the keyboard entirely. This flexibility allows you to make the best decision based on your needs and preferences. Many of the best Chromebooks offer 2-in-1 designs and, for good reason, they offer a level of versatility that is simply unmatched by traditional laptop designs.

Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5i Chromebook Plus

The best convertible for most people

$369 $499 Save $130

The new Flex 5i Chromebook Plus brings fresh hardware, a stellar FHD+ touch display with 16:10 aspect ratio, and a bunch of “Plus” perks to help get you started. This should be a great Chromebook for most people who want a good balance of durability, versatility, and performance.

Pros

  • Snappy 13th Gen Core i3-1315U performance
  • 8GB of RAM, 128GB SSD
  • Comes with “Plus” perks
  • 14-inch FHD+ touch display with 16:10 aspect ratio
Cons

  • Can find cheaper alternatives

Compared to our long-running Flex 5i 13 recommendation, the new Plus version boosts the screen size up to 14 inches and gives it a taller 16:10 aspect ratio for more screen real estate. This also boosts the resolution up to 1920 x 1200 (FHD+). It otherwise has about 300 nits brightness, glossy finish, and 60Hz refresh rate. For inking, any USI pen will do the trick. You can check out some of the best stylus pens for Chromebooks if you’re interested.

Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5i Chromebook Plus review: Boring but still the best Chromebook

This is the embodiment of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

In terms of hardware performance, Lenovo lists both 13th Gen Core i3 and Core i5 CPUs, though so far we’ve only seen the former models for sale. Best Buy has a model with Core i3 CPU, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB SSD for about $499. Expect availability to expand as the laptop ages.

Best value
Lenovo Chromebook Duet 11 (2024)

Portable productivity

$279 $379 Save $100

The Lenovo Chromebook Duet 11 is perfect for anyone wanting a portable, versatile laptop that won’t break the bank. The Duet 11 does double duty, allowing you to use it as a traditional laptop or as a ChromeOS tablet.

Pros

  • Hard to beat the price even when not on sale
  • Small stature and very versatile
  • Beautiful and vivid 11.6-inch touch display
Cons

  • Cramped keyboard
  • Sporadic performance issues
  • Not great for lap use

The Lenovo Chromebook Duet 11 offers a level of versatility that far exceeds that of a traditional laptop and surpasses most other 2-in-1’s. That’s because, unlike most other devices on this list, the Duet 11 offers a detachable keyboard, which gives you the option to use this little device as a laptop or a ChromeOS tablet.

To keep the screen upright, Lenovo has incorporated a kickstand, which can be used in either portrait or landscape mode. If you regularly use your Chromebook on your lap, then you may want to skip the Duet 11 because the kickstand makes using it on your lap more difficult than most other devices on this list.

A Lenovo Chromebook Duet 11 (2024) straight on with a pineapple background

With a 10.95-inch display, the Lenovo Chromebook Duet 11 is very compact, making it a great travel companion. While the 16:10 display may not be the biggest around, it makes up for it with performance. Text is crisp and clear thanks to its 1920 x 1200 resolution and using it outdoors shouldn’t be an issue thanks to its 400 nits of peak brightness. It also supports USI 2.0 styluses or the Lenovo USI Pen 2, allowing you to write, annotate, or draw directly on the screen.

That compactness does come with a bit of a trade-off. With a smaller overall footprint than most other laptops, the detachable keyboard on the Duet 11 is very cramped, which can cause some frustration when typing.

Review: Lenovo’s Chromebook Duet 11 is a portable productivity partner

A great tablet that can do computer things too

4

Performance is adequate but can suffer some slowdowns when pushed. The Duet 11 comes with a MediaTek Kompanio 838 processor, either 4GB or 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM, and 128GB of storage. The MediaTek processor offers decent performance, but the paltry 4GB of RAM is what holds the Duet 11 back. If you can swing it, do yourself a favor and get the version with 8GB of RAM. Battery life is also quite good, offering about 12 hours of life per charge.

Acer Chromebook Spin 714 with bag

Premium pick
Acer Chromebook Spin 714 (2023)

One of Acer’s finest

$530 $700 Save $170

The Acer Spin 714 is one of the more expensive options in this list, but it has a ton of performance potential and a gorgeous display to boot. If you have a bit more to spend and want a premium Chromebook, this is the one to buy.

Pros

  • Strong 13th Gen Core i5 performance
  • 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD
  • Durable and versatile build
  • 14-inch FHD+ touch display
Cons

  • Relatively expensive
  • Lacks Chromebook Plus certification

One of our favorite Chromebooks for the past few years running is the Acer Spin 714, and it was updated for 2023. The physical design didn’t really change, but Acer packed in a bunch of updated hardware including 13th Gen Intel Core CPUs. The most common listing around includes a Core i5-1335U chip, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD for quite a bit of performance potential. On top of that, Acer says you should expect about 10 hours of battery life; that number will come down in real-world use, but you should still expect most of a workday on a charge.

Acer Spin 714

The Spin 714 and its premium design bridge the gap somewhat between typical low-cost Chromebooks and more high-end Windows clamshells, in terms of rugged build quality, port availability, and performance. On the Chrome OS side, it even comes with a built-in stylus for getting the most out of the touch-enabled operating system.

Acer Chromebook Spin 714 (2023) review: All the performance for all the money

Acer charges a premium price but you get a premium product in return

The 14-inch display remains unchanged from the last generation with an FHD+ resolution, 16:10 aspect ratio, and 100% sRGB color reproduction. Top-firing speakers live between the comfortable keyboard and display hinge, with DTS tuning and smart amp to boost sound. Above the display is a 2K webcam and privacy shutter for quality video conferencing. Be sure to check out some other great Acer Chromebooks if this one isn’t quite what you need.

A real workhorse
Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 514

Comes with “Plus” perks

The Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 514 offers a blend of performance and versatility that stands above most other Chromebooks. This laptop is perfectly suited for light to moderate tasks and will gladly be the workhorse family computer.

Pros

  • Strong performance
  • Responsive touchscreen
  • Adequate battery life and fast charging
Cons

  • Plastic build
  • Trackpad performance isn’t spectacular
  • The screen doesn’t get very bright

Acer makes fantastic Chromebooks and the Chromebook Plus Spin 514 is more than up to the task to carry on that legacy. With ample power, a versatile 2-in-1 design, and a good display, the Spin 514 is a great all-around laptop.

The Chromebook Plus Spin 514 comes with an Intel Core 3 100U processor and 8GB of LPDDR5X RAM, allowing this laptop to handle light to moderate activities with ease. With six cores and eight threads, the Intel Core 3 100U processor can handle everything from spreadsheets to more intensive tasks such as photo editing. Thanks to its 128GB of onboard storage, it has plenty of space for all your documents.

Like Acer’s other offerings, the Spin 514 comes with a good-looking display. At just 14 inches, this 1920 x 1200 IPS display is conveniently sized for tossing in a bag when on the go but is still big enough to get some serious work done. At just 3.31 pounds, it’s not the lightest option on this list, but it doesn’t hinder its portability either.

Review: The Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 514 is a future-proofed laptop worthy of homework and beyond

It’s just a bit pricey

2

The only aspect of the Acer Chromebook Spin 514 that’s holding it back is its build materials. While the build quality is decent enough, Acer used a ton of plastic when constructing the 514, which keeps it from feeling like a premium option. The touchpad is built with the same mindset. It’s an alright touchpad, but it’s a bit clunky and lacks polish.

Best detachable
Lenovo Chromebook Duet 5

A true 2-in-1 Chromebook

Lenovo’s Chromebook Duet 5 is a true 2-in-1 device with detachable keyboard and touchpad. It’s as comfortable acting as a tablet as it is a notebook, and it will deliver one of the best tablet typing experiences around. The Qualcomm 7c (Gen 2) CPU might feel underpowered at times, but the tradeoff comes in the form of superb battery life.

Pros

  • Bright FHD touch display
  • Superb battery life
  • One of the best 2-in-1 keyboards around
Cons

  • Qualcomm 7c (Gen 2) feels underpowered at times

A true 2-in-1 laptop means the keyboard and touchpad can detach from the tablet display portion. These Chromebooks are rarer than your standard non-detachable convertibles, but Lenovo has you covered if you’re in need of a 2-in-1. The Chromebook Duet 5 has a 13.3-inch touch display with 1920×1080 (FHD) resolution and up to 400 nits of brightness; without the keyboard, it’s a bona fide tablet with thin bezels. The screen hits 100% DCI-P3 color coverage and can handle inking with an active pen.

When you do need to get down to work, the keyboard and touchpad snap on to deliver a notebook experience. It even clasps magnetically to become a folio when the keyboard is closed. It’s one of the best keyboards around when it comes to 2-in-1 Chromebooks.

The Duet 5 has a full-size keyboard with decent key travel as well as an accurate touchpad that makes productivity a breeze. It’s powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7c (Gen 2) CPU matched with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of eMMC storage. The CPU isn’t the most powerful around, but it will handle daily productivity work and streaming. The real highlight here is the battery life. We’ve been able to get a couple of days of casual use out of the Duet 5 without needing a recharge, making it an ideal travel companion.

Inexpensive folio
Asus Chromebook CM30 Detachable (CM3001)

A solid choice for note takers and media consumption

$220 $299 Save $79

The Asus Chromebook CM30 Detachable is a solid offering for the right buyer. It’s not going to win any performance awards, but it’s built-in stylus and low price make it a good note-taking or media consumption device.

Pros

  • Removable compact keyboard
  • Built-in stylus
  • Versatile design
Cons

  • Base model only comes with 4GB of RAM
  • Durability concerns
  • Performance issues

The Asus Chromebook CM30 Detachable is an interesting Chromebook and, for the right person, could be an excellent device. Much like the Lenovo Duet series, the CM30 Detachable features a folio design, allowing you to use it as a laptop, or you can pop the keyboard off and use it as a ChromeOS tablet. The keyboard is nice and compact, with a good overall feel.

Asus CM30 overhead shot of the keyboard set on a marbled table

Like other folios, the display is kept upright with the help of a kickstand. This makes it less than ideal for use on the lap and more suitable for hard surfaces. The kickstand is made from plastic, which is a bit concerning durability-wise.

Asus made the wise decision of including a built-in stylus with the CM30 Detachable. This stylus makes it incredibly simple to use the CM30 for note-taking or drawing. It’s not the most accurate stylus experience, but offers 4,096 pressure levels and is stored directly inside the laptop. The 10.5-inch TFT LCD display and its 1920 x 1200 resolution are decent for the price point, but leave a bit to be desired when using it outdoors.

This $300 3-in-1 Chromebook is a starving artist’s reprieve

But don’t be surprised by lots of compromise

With a MediaTek Kompanio 520 processor and either 4GB or 8GB of RAM, the CM30 isn’t the speediest of devices. You should probably stay away from the 4GB model altogether and just opt for the identically priced 8GB version that is sold through Walmart. Even with the additional RAM, the CM30 can struggle when pushed, which is why this device excels as a device strictly for consuming content or taking notes.

Least expensive
Acer Chromebook Spin 311

Affordable and compact

Acer’s Spin 311 Chromebook has long been a favorite budget option thanks to its compact size, convertible design, and affordable pricing that often dips even lower than the everyday tag. It’s a great option for casual Chromebook users and kids who are just getting started on the platform.

Pros

  • Hard to beat the price even when not on sale
  • Very good battery life and a compact 11.6-inch build
  • Compact 11.6-inch touch display
Cons

  • Won’t match the performance of some pricier models

When it comes to the best cheap Chromebooks, Acer is hard to beat. Its Chromebook Spin 311 is a convertible laptop priced at about $224, but there are frequent discounts that drop it below the $200 mark. Yes, there are some compromises to make at this price.

The 11.6-inch display has a lower 1366×768 (HD) resolution than our top pick, but at this size it won’t look nearly as grainy as you might think. The convertible hinges let the screen rotate around 360°, making it a great Chromebook for kids or users with smaller hands.

Acer Chromebook Spin 311 review, one month later: A good laptop with forgivable flaws

One of the best budget Chromebooks you can buy

The MediaTek MT8183C CPU has eight cores to work with, and it’s accompanied by 4GB of RAM and 64GB of eMMC storage. This is suitable for a lighter workload with lots of productivity tasks, and it will handle streaming media with ease. A big tradeoff with the lighter performance hardware is longer battery life. The Spin 311 can run for well more than 10 hours — Acer claims 15 hours in documentation — on a charge, making it a proper travel companion. Ports include USB-C, USB-A, and a 3.5mm audio jack, plus there’s a lock slot for use around a busy office.

Best mobility
Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 3i (Gen 8, 12.2″)

Even better when on sale

Lenovo updated IdeaPad Flex 3i has a larger touch display with FHD+ resolution, perfect for the convertible functionality. It’s not the most powerful Chromebook out there, but it will handle productivity work, streaming, and browsing with ease.

Pros

  • 12.2-inch touch display with FHD+ resolution
  • Versatile and compact convertible design
  • Quad-core Intel Atom CPU
Cons

  • Slow eMMC storage, only 4GB of RAM

Lenovo’s IdeaPad Flex 3i (Gen 8) is a recent release that gets a lot right. It’s one of the best Lenovo Chromebooks out there, especially if you’re looking for a compact convertible. Its display measure 12.2 inches but has a 1920×1200 (FHD+) resolution for a crisp picture. The laptop overall isn’t any larger than the previous generation; Lenovo shrunk the bezels to fit a larger screen without adding any bulk. With a convertible design, you can use the laptop in notebook, tent, stand, and tablet modes without any difficulty.

This fresh Chromebook is powered by a quad-core Intel Atom N100 CPU that’s paired with 4GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 64GB of eMMC storage. You can expect snappy performance while browsing the web, hitting productivity tasks, and streaming. Just don’t expect it to handle games or other intensive tasks. The slim build holds onto a generous selection of ports, including dual USB-A 3.2, USB-C 3.2, HDMI, 3.5mm audio, and a microSD card reader. You can always check out some great Chromebook docks if you need wider connectivity, but the native selection should suit most people.

Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 3i Chromebook (Gen 8) review: Bigger screen, even bigger flaws

We abolished the bulky bezels, but at what cost?

Priced regularly at about $349, we’ve seen it drop to as low as $170. That’s a stellar deal, and anytime you can find it for around $200 it’s no doubt going to be a better option than even the Acer Spin 311 that we included here as our top budget pick.

What is Chromebook Plus certification?

Out of several new models in Google’s Chromebook Plus stable, only a few sport 2-in-1 designs. Chromebooks with the Plus designation must adhere to strict guidelines for hardware specs, including at least a 12th Gen Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 5000 processor, 8GB or more RAM, at least 128GB of storage, a 1080p webcam, and a display with at least a 1080p resolution.

In addition to the hardware requirements, these Chromebooks have access to Magic Eraser in the Google Photos app, they get three free months of Adobe Photoshop and Pixlr Premium, and an available 25% discount of the LumaFusion video editing suite. More features are coming in the near future, but these are some great perks to get you started.

Not unlike the Intel Evo designation found on some modern Chromebooks and Windows PCs, Chromebook Plus is essentially a baseline standard that guarantees a laptop ships with recent hardware, and is included in Google’s plans for future feature sets that push the envelope in terms of mobile computing.

Getting the best 2-in-1 and convertible Chromebook for you

Chromebooks are incredibly versatile laptops and the ones with a 2-in-1 design crank that versatility to the max. These devices allow you to use them as a traditional laptop but open up all kinds of possibilities by letting you use them as a ChromeOS tablet. Depending on the model, this can be done by detaching the keyboard or flipping the keyboard behind the display. You can even extend their usefulness through a variety of Chromebook accessories.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5i represents the best 2-in-1 for most people thanks to its combination of features and performance. With a powerful processor, a solid IPS display, and long battery life, it should have no trouble keeping up with your needs. The IdeaPad Flex 5i routinely goes on sale, making it one heck of a value.

If you have a bit more money to spend and want a premium Chromebook, then you need to check out the Acer Chromebook Spin 714. In addition to a premium and durable design, you’re getting excellent performance and plenty of storage for all of your needs. It may be expensive, but there aren’t many Chromebooks that can top the Spin 714.

For those of you who are on a stricter budget, or love the idea of a detachable keyboard, the Lenovo Duet series is another solid option. Both the Lenovo Chromebook Duet 11 and the Duet 5 allow the keyboard to be completely removed, making it a true 2-in-1 device. The Duet 11 is particularly interesting thanks to its affordable price tag, especially when it’s on sale. Both Duet devices are fantastic for road warriors looking for a device that can be easily tossed in a bag.
