AlwaysOnMusic: An always-on display for iPhones when music is playing

Apple didn’t introduce always-on display (AOD) functionality with its iPhone 13 lineup this year as many had expected them to do. Fortunately, one advantage to jailbreaking these days is that you can enjoy an always-on display experience on your current iPhone without waiting for Apple to get their bleep together.

In fact, a newly released and free jailbreak tweak dubbed AlwaysOnMusic by iOS developer Jez takes a new and rather exciting approach to always-on display functionality for anyone who enjoys using their iPhone for music consumption.

More specifically, AlwaysOnMusic only activates always-on display functionality on your iPhone when you have music playing in the background, as shown above. This simple addition tries to make it easier to discern what’s playing at a glance without having to wake your display.

AlwaysOnMusic shines when you have your iPhone connected to a docking speaker system or simply standing upright via a MagSafe charger because the display will already be pointing at your face — and hence field of view — when the always-on display activates.

As soon as you stop playing music, your iPhone’s display returns to being non-always-on to conserve battery life in the long term.

Worthy of note, AlwaysOnMusic works with all major music-playing apps including Apple Music, Pandora, Spotify, and a whole swath of others. In fact, we haven’t found any apps that it doesn’t play nicely with.

AlwyasOnMusic doesn’t come with any options to configure, so what you see is ultimately what you get.

Those interested in giving the new AlwaysOnMusic tweak a try can download it for free from the Twickd repository via their favorite package manager. The tweak supports jailbroken iOS 14 devices and looks best on handsets equipped with OLED displays.
