Our homes have changed significantly over the last ten years. Sure, you might still be calling the place your humble abode, but what lightens it up, secures it, and even cleans it now looks drastically different.
The modern home is a smart one, and why wouldn’t it be? Smart home devices simplify our lives, essentially by automating repetitive tasks. Now, in a bid to capture a share of the smart home market, an established drone company is trying to channel its inner Dyson.
Drone and gimbal giant DJI is reportedly looking to enter the robot vacuum market. Currently dominated by the likes of iRobot, Ecovacs, Roborock, and more, the robot vacuum industry is expected to grow into a $31.79 billion market by 2033, and rightfully so, more companies want a piece of the eventual pie.
DJI wants to get a foot in the door, and it could do so with its long-rumored ‘Romo.’ For reference, the drone giant filed a trademark for ‘DJI Romo‘ all the way back in late 2023, with the actual device reportedly spotted in testing in late 2024.
Now, it looks like DJI’s robo vacuum ambitions have materialized into a read-to-ship product, as highlighted by China-based drone enthusiast @OsitaLV (via TechRadar).
Don’t worry, Romo won’t fly around your house
The image shared by @OsitaLV highlights multiple sealed DJI Romo shipment boxes on a pallet truck. This could suggest that DJI is currently shipping out the new Romo to authorized retail sellers, with the intention of officially launching the product in the near future. For what it’s worth, DJI is yet to acknowledge Romo’s existence.
While not certain, it is likely that the company will port over its drones’ obstacle-avoidance tech to the robo vacuum. Early leaks also suggest that Romo will have a built-in mop for deep cleaning, paired with dedicated cleaning plans, room mapping, self-emptying functionality, pet detection, and more. Whether DJI’s entry into the robo vacuum market sweeps the competition is yet to be seen.
