Gemini now lets you create, preview, and edit PDFs and files directly in your chat

Gemini has been capable of handling files through its multimodal features and deep integration with Google Workspace. Now, Google is even turning Gemini into a full-fledged office suite chatbot.

The company announced that it has added in-chat document management directly into Gemini. Users can create, preview, and edit PDFs, as well as Docs, Sheets, Slides, and even text and code files on the fly without leaving the conversation.

Gemini is steadily gaining practical file editor skills

Last year, it started giving users a dedicated Canvas interface for coding, app previews, and document revisions. If you wanted to do the heavy lifting, however, you had to do much of it inside Workspace apps or external links, where Gemini worked only as a summonable sidebar assistant.

It was only in April this year that Google added support for file generation and downloads across PDFs, Docs, Sheets, and Markdown files.

Surprisingly, Google didn’t take long to bring these new document-creation and editing tools directly baked into the Gemini thread.

Users can create and edit files directly in Gemini chat

Google says that users can generate PDFs from their notes and reports right inside the chat. They can also expand the document and make adjustments, such as highlighting text and asking Gemini to create graphs, as shown in Google’s video demo.

I tried generating and editing PDFs with Gemini, and I appreciate how fast it turns a report or an image into an editable PDF. I also tweaked the document with follow-up prompts, all without leaving the chat window. Inside the file editor, there’s also a nifty button to undo edits and export or share the document.

My only quirk is that most of these generated PDFs and files take time to load.

Gemini also supports generation and editing for Google’s native formats like Docs, Sheets, and Slides. In addition, you can edit and download Markdown files, code files, and standard TXT notes in-app.

If you have a paid Gemini plan, you can also trigger multistep workflows with Task, allowing you to run automated routines when editing, generating, or sharing these files.

Who can access in-app Gemini file editing

Google says that PDF editing and creation are available to web and mobile users wherever Gemini is supported in all languages. For other file formats like Docs, Sheets, and TXT, these tools are currently limited to the web version. Google will likely expand that support to mobile apps in the future, though it hasn’t shared an exact timeline yet.

Of course, these are Workspace-tied capabilities, meaning only subscribers under Google One AI plans can take full advantage of them.

Both ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot have supported editing and exporting popular file formats, including Word, Excel, and PDFs, right inside their chat interfaces for months.

Still, it is nice to see Google slowly playing catch-up, especially since its office formats are among the most widely used on the web.
