You hate to see problems come up when you’re just trying to get a quick YouTube session in. However, it looks like some folks are having issues with the app, with it only providing a streaming quality option that peaks at just 480p (via Android Authority). Now, this would be strange on its own, but the reports come from Standard and Premium account holders.
Naturally, there isn’t a pinpoint reason why this is happening. However, some report that clearing the app cache brings back the full resolution list. That seems to do the trick for most app-related issues that we’ve seen. If that doesn’t work for you, you can always reinstall the app for a fresh start.
This doesn’t appear to solve the problem in the long term, though, with reports showing it eventually returns. As mentioned, there are many variables involved, like device type, app version, OS version, etc. The only thing folks can do now is just hope they aren’t affected.
If you are, you can try one of the solutions above or just watch in a browser. If it’s spreading to a wide number of people, let’s hope Google figures out a fix ASAP. While 480p is watchable, it’s definitely not a pleasure in 2026. YouTube isn’t immune to issues. We’ve seen plenty of problems pop up in the past, so this isn’t anything new. We expect the problem to be ironed out quietly at some point.
YouTube is pretty complete
YouTube is a fairly complete experience at this point. It’s been around for over 20 years and has evolved into one of the premier video platforms for creators.
Although long-form content dominated the platform, Shorts is what most people watch now for their quick Dopamine hit. While you’ll still find plenty of unpolished uploads, more and more content is worthy of being on broadcast TV.
More ways to make money
And while ad revenue has dipped, YouTube does provide alternate ways to make money on the platform, like memberships, partnerships, and even direct product sales.
Most recently, YouTube formed a partnership with Amazon, providing creators with a new revenue channel. Since Amazon is a major online retail platform, this is a big boost, as creators can send viewers to make an easy affiliate purchase.
However, YouTube recently announced that creators would have to meet new thresholds to participate in the brand’s ad revenue program. Starting on February 1, 2027, users will need to accumulate 8,000 watch hours over a year with long-form content.
Shorts views will increase to 20 million views from the previous 10 million. If you’re an existing creator in the partner program, you won’t need to meet these new goals. But if you’re starting out, you’ll want to grind to meet the current goals before they change.
