The Samsung Galaxy Ring is facing a tough time ahead, according to reports about its future, and a growing patent dispute between Samsung and Oura.

Strategy under review

Since its release in July 2024, Samsung has not treated the Galaxy Ring to an update, and little has been said about a potential sequel, despite the company releasing three new smartwatches since the Ring made its debut.

This may be due to Samsung being undecided on the near future of the smart ring, according to anonymous industry insiders speaking to Korea JoongAng Daily, an English publication reporting on daily Korean news.

The source claims Samsung is “reassessing its strategy” for the Galaxy Ring, a move apparently prompted by poor sales following considerable excitement around the wearable at launch.

Anyone expecting a Galaxy Ring 2 to launch alongside the Galaxy S26 phones in January or February 2026 will be disappointed, as the source states such a wearable will not be revealed on stage.

However, it’s stated Samsung isn’t expected to cancel the Galaxy Ring line, despite not even releasing a new color, finish, or version in 2025. Instead, it has focused its wearable efforts on the redesigned Galaxy Watch 8 and Galaxy Watch 8 Classic.

There could be another issue forcing Samsung’s hand when it comes to the Galaxy Ring, as a legal dispute between it and Oura continue to brew.

In mid-November Oura filed a complaint with the International Trade Commission (ITC) naming several brands making smart rings — Zepp for the Amazfit Ring, Reebok for the Reebok Smart Ring, Nexxbase for the Luna Ring, and Samsung — claiming they were infringing on Oura patents.

This follows Oura’s successful claims against Circular, Omate, and RingConn, which it added had been resolved through licensing deals.

Samsung responded with a lawsuit of its own on December 1, claiming Oura is infringing on several patents including how exercise goals are generated and delivered, how accelerometers are calibrated, and how devices interact with charging platforms.

As the legal battle brews, Samsung may have put plans for the Galaxy Ring 2 on hold, particularly if sales of the first model quickly dried up following its release, should the Korean report be accurate.

Oura has recently released the Oura Ring 4 Ceramic, which seems to have solved some of the durability issues which faced previous titanium versions. Samsung has announced a press conference for CES 2026 at the beginning of January, and is expected to launch the Galaxy S26 series soon afterwards at a separate event.
