Many users buy Pixel phones to get a clean and smooth Android experience. The Pixel phone does deliver on this, but you may be disappointed with some of the company’s decisions on the launcher. Many of us at Android Police love our Pixel phones, but not the launcher, and a major reason is the lack of customization options.

On the bright side of things, it looks like Google has taken notice of this and is now working towards fixing major quirks in the Pixel Launcher. Folks over at Android Authority have provided evidence showing what problem it’ll solve and how.

Google’s Pixel Launcher wants to let users take back a bit more control

One of the biggest complaints about the Pixel Launcher is the lack of flexibility of the At a glance widget. While it shows useful information like weather or calendar events, you can’t remove it from your home screen, even when you disable all its features. One of the interesting criticisms came from a Reddit user u/bestbuyguy69, who summed up the frustration by calling it “a pretty thing Apple would do.”

However, this limitation may soon become a thing of the past, because Android Authority spotted a new “Show on home screen” toggle in the At a Glance settings in the latest Android Canary build with Android System Intelligence version B.17.playstore.pixel10.825046611. The new toggle doesn’t work at this moment, but it’s a strong enough hint that Google is actively working to allow users to completely remove the widget from the home screen.

Ideally, when the new option is available for the Pixel users, disabling the toggle should remove all the At a Glance elements, including date and day, from the home screen. This is currently not possible because the date and day will still show up even if you disable the At a Glance toggle. For now, the only way to get rid of it is by installing another on your Pixel phone.

However, the new toggle in the At a Glance settings doesn’t guarantee that the feature will make it to the final release. Google has a history of scrapping useful features in the middle of their development, and the same could happen in this case, too.

In addition to the ability to remove the At a Glance from our Pixel home screens, the Pixel Launcher is currently missing other basic features, including support for third-party icon packs, not being able to reposition the Google Search bar, and many more. We’d love to see Google fixing them all in the future.
