Like every year, many Android smartphones were launched in 2025.
We got the new Google Pixel 10 series with an improved Tensor G5 chipset and Qi2 wireless charging, the Samsung Galaxy S25 series arrived with new Galaxy AI features, and the OnePlus 13 launched with a powerful processor and a not-so-flagship price tag.
The choice of smartphone to buy this holiday season is endless, and with Black Friday coming up, there are genuinely some great options to pick from.
And while these Android flagships are great, I want to try something new this year, and that is the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
Samsung improved it a lot over the previous generation, but I’m still holding out on buying one right now, and here’s why.
Galaxy Z Fold 7 fixes a lot Samsung got wrong before
Thinner design, better cover screen, flagship processor — what’s not to like?
For years, Samsung has offered a book-style foldable smartphone in almost every market worldwide. That, however, doesn’t necessarily mean it has been the best foldable phone to buy.
Just as Chinese smartphone makers have redefined what smartphone cameras can do compared to traditional flagships, Samsung’s foldable smartphones also began to fall behind.
The Galaxy Z Fold series was thick, heavy, and didn’t offer much beyond what phones from the likes of Oppo and Honor did, apart from the One UI software experience.
That was until the Galaxy Z Fold 7 launched. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 fixed almost everything that was wrong with Samsung’s Fold lineup.
A wider cover display that feels like a traditional smartphone screen? Check. A foldable phone that’s almost as slim as a standard smartphone and comparable to competitors? Check.
A bright foldable display that’s easily visible outdoors? Check. A flagship-level camera? Check. A top-tier processor? Check. The list goes on.
Samsung made major changes with the Galaxy Z Fold 7, making it thinner, lighter, and easier to use.
While I haven’t used one for more than a few hours at a stretch, I’ve been meaning to get one since its launch in July 2025.
But there’s just one reason I’ve held out on buying the Z Fold 7, and that’s the price.
There’s just one big problem with the Z Fold 7, and that is its price
It’s great hardware, but the value still doesn’t quite add up yet
One thing Samsung didn’t improve with the Galaxy Z Fold 7, aside from battery capacity, is the price.
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 isn’t a cheap device. The book-style foldable starts at a staggering $2,000 in the US, and goes up to $2,120 for the 512GB storage model.
That’s an incredibly expensive phone, even pricier than Samsung’s new Galaxy XR headset, which starts at $1,800.
Still, Samsung has made several improvements to the foldable, and it takes significant engineering to build such a device, but even then, this smartphone clearly targets premium buyers.
Black Friday discounts should finally make the Z Fold 7 tempting.
Thankfully, Black Friday is right around the corner, meaning Samsung will likely offer steep discounts on the Galaxy Z Fold 7, making it a slightly easier purchase than dropping $2,000 outright.
For reference, Black Friday falls on November 28, 2025, just a few weeks away, so it’s now a short waiting game before the deals begin.
Last year, Samsung discounted the Galaxy Z Fold 6 by $500, bringing the price down to $1,400, so a similar offer could return this year.
Moreover, with Google Pixel sales rising in the US, that too at Samsung’s expense, the company has even more incentive to push users toward its premium foldable with stronger discounts this season.
I’m holding out for the Galaxy Z Fold 7 Black Friday deal
All in all, even though Samsung is currently offering a $300 discount on the Galaxy Z Fold 7, making it a tempting purchase right now, buying the Z Fold 7 today could still be a costly mistake since even bigger discounts seem to be just around the corner.
Instead, I’m waiting to see if the Z Fold 7 drops even further before hitting the buy button (and you should too).
I’d rather use the saved money to buy accessories for my new foldable or a new pair of earphones, like the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds or Pixel Buds Pro 2.
