If you’ve been wondering when Google’s TV Streamer would see some action again, the wait’s finally over, sort of. Google has started rolling out a new update for its Google TV Streamer, the first in roughly five months. Unfortunately, while the update sounds promising at first glance, it doesn’t bring anything new to the table and is already out of date.

The new build, labeled UTTK.250729.004, comes in at around 227 MB and bumps the device’s software up to the August 2025 security patch, as spotted by 9to5Google. That’s the strange part — it’s October, and this patch is already two months old. This means the update technically improves the system’s security, but it’s still lagging behind the rest of Google’s ecosystem, which has moved on to newer patch levels.

The changelog is about as generic as it gets, simply stating that the release includes “security patch updates to August 2025” along with “other bug fixes and performance improvements.” There are no new features, no interface tweaks, and no clear explanation of what those fixes actually are.

Four updates in, and Google’s update schedule still feels offbeat

This is now the fourth update since the streamer launched, following a fairly uneven release schedule. Earlier updates landed in November 2024, February 2025, and May 2025 — the latter jumping from an August 2024 security patch all the way to January 2025 at the time. Since then, Google has gone quiet, and this new update breaks that silence without adding much substance. The slow cadence is a bit odd considering the company’s push to tighten update consistency across its Android ecosystem.

If you haven’t seen the update prompt yet, you can manually check for it by heading to Settings → System → About → System updates on your device. Google is rolling it out gradually, so it may take a few days before everyone gets it. While it’s nice to see Google’s latest streaming device getting some attention again, the excitement quickly fades when you realize the patch is already two months behind.
