It’s easy to get lost in the sea of health and fitness apps, especially when your data is across so many different platforms. Luckily, Google Health Connect was introduced some years back, giving Android users a way to bring order to chaos. And what was originally meant to be a hub for all your metrics could now be evolving, as Health Connect could soon introduce native step tracking into the app.

This report comes from Android Authority, finding evidence of this change in a Canary build of Android. While step tracking currently isn’t working in the Canary build, it does allow the phone to be added and managed as a health device. While a phone has a variety of sensors, in this situation, Health Connect can only utilize the phone for step counts.

Nothing official yet

Again, this isn’t a feature that’s currently working, but there is groundwork that suggests it could be implemented as part of the Google Health Connect experience in the future. And as you might expect, if this does happen, it could be the start of something big. While there are plenty of great fitness apps out there, being able to get all your data through one native Android app could be what users are looking for.

This is especially the case since brands have the option not to share information with Health Connect, which can be inconvenient. And truth be told, Google already has a platform that it could utilize in order to make this transition easy and sweet. It’s been a few years now, but Google’s purchase of Fitbit, and so far, the acquisition has bear little fruit.

We’ve seen some parts utilized to prop up the Pixel Watch, and parts of the software have evolved as well. But if Google is looking to make a huge leap with health and fitness, Health Connect could be the way to do it. Of course, we’ll have to wait and see what happens. There’s a lot that could change from now until the step tracking feature gets integrated.

There’s also the chance that nothing happens at all, and this is just something in code. If you’re someone that tracks your health and fitness metrics, we recommend giving the Health Connect a try. It’s a robust app that does a good job of organizing the important information that matters to you most.
