Gemini’s desktop site recently shifted its prompt bar to the center and swapped the side-by-side capabilities for a unified Tools menu. Some of that cleaner setup is now arriving on mobile, complete with a new borderless look that removes the visual barriers.
As spotted by 9to5Google, the tech giant has revamped the Gemini mobile app, swapping the prompt bar’s old appearance for a borderless design that cuts down on visual clutter. The update is hitting both Android and iOS.
As you can see in the screenshots below, the new design merges with the app background and keyboard. This tweak helps keep users’ attention on the conversation instead of the typing or voice interface.
Subtle shadows add depth
Furthermore, the refresh adds a subtle top-edge shadow, making the prompt bar look like a floating sheet, as 9to5Google noted. This matches the Plus and Tools menu styling on the web, though those features aren’t fully available on mobile yet. Likewise, some users may still see the old side-by-side Tool chips on the mobile app, showing the rollout isn’t complete.
The Gemini app’s new borderless prompt bar might receive mixed reactions. While some may enjoy the clean, uncluttered look, some will miss the defined edges of the old design, which made it easier to spot where to type.
Additionally, Google has moved the disclaimer “Gemini can make mistakes, so double-check it” from under the prompt bar to the end of the generated response, freeing up space for more text on screen.
This is just Google’s latest tweak to Gemini’s look. Earlier this year, the company already reshuffled the homepage, pulling features like Deep Research, Canvas, and Video (Veo 2) directly into the prompt bar itself.
It’s worth noting that the new prompt bar redesign is still rolling out and hasn’t reached everyone yet, but a wider launch is in progress since the change is appearing on more Gemini accounts.
