Samsung is rolling out an intelligent new scam detection feature that none of the competing phone brands currently offer.
For reference, Google offers what is widely known as Call Screening, a feature that essentially answers calls on your behalf and probes what the call is about. Apple, on the other hand, offers Silence Unknown Callers feature that prevents you from getting calls from people you don’t know.
Samsung already offers similar functionality with its Bixby Text Call and Smart Call features, and it now seems to be rolling out a new feature that directly addresses the growing threat of AI-powered voice phishing attacks.
The new feature is called Voice Phishing Suspected Call Alert, and before you get too excited, no, it isn’t available globally just yet (via 9to5Google). The feature is currently limited to users in Korea, though it does have the potential to eventually make its way out to more regions.
Although the tech giant didn’t detail how exactly it spots voice spoofing, it did say that it detects and learns by tapping into data from Korea’s National Police Agency and the National Institute of Scientific Investigation, with all detection taking place on-device.
The feature might be limited to outgoing calls
When speaking to someone that’s not saved as a contact on your Galaxy device, the ongoing call UI will highlight a “Detecting” pop-up, indicating that Voice Phishing Suspected Call Alert is in operation.
If and when a voice phishing is detected, users will receive an immediate notification that’s accompanied by sound and vibration, as seen in the screenshots above. From what I could infer by translating the Korean blog post into English, it looks like the feature will only work when you are making an outgoing call to an unsaved number, and not when you receive a call from an unsaved number. This is a significant limitation, and potentially one that Samsung will address in the future.
The feature is limited to Galaxy devices running stable One UI 8, which means it can currently only be utilized by those who purchased the South Korean tech giant’s latest foldables.
