Despite having a pretty flawless track record in the past, Sonos has had a tough couple of years, mainly due to its redesigned app failing to land with its customers. Rather than acknowledging the mistake and making changes early, the brand decided to double down on its vision, insisting that it would improve and get better.
The company would make small steps to make improvements, but it never really shook off the damage it had caused, which would eventually lead to the CEO at the time resigning. While it’s now attempting to right the ship by bringing in an industry veteran, it seems like luck just isn’t with Sonos, as a report has come out from Bloomberg shedding light that one of its devices has a problem with overheating.
Something else the company has to deal with
And to be clear, this isn’t just a matter of the device shutting down once it reaches a certain threshold. But instead, there are reports from Reddit that show charging ports melting on the Sonos Roam. When you get to see some of the images on Reddit, you get a sense of how severe it can be and, to be honest, it’s quite scary.
However, there haven’t been any announcements about this problem, but Bloomberg does report that Sonos acknowledges the issue found on its Roam speaker, and it’s closely monitoring the situation as it unfolds. While it did not provide a reason as to why this is occurring, the brand did share that “environmental conditions appear to play a role.”
This is definitely something to be concerned about if you happen to own one of these speakers. Perhaps more concerning is that Sonos isn’t really offering any public support here, considering this could be something quite serious. While it is an older product, there are retailers offering this model for sale, alongside the newer Sonos Roam 2.
Over time, things could change, but as of now, there doesn’t appear to be any clear course of action that a consumer with this speaker should take. There are reports that Sonos is replacing Roam models if you contact them. However, we don’t know if this applies to all Sonos Roam speakers, or just the ones that get damaged while charging.
If you have this model in your possession, we recommend contacting Sonos in order to get things resolved. Sonos claims that the occurrence rate for this to happen is quite low, and that it has made “software updates and hardware improvements” in order to prevent it from happening. With that said, we wouldn’t recommend taking any chances, especially when it comes to things like this.
