Google Photos has been widely rolling out an updated editor for still images this week. According to a new APK teardown, Google’s gearing up to give the app’s video editor a similar treatment.
Poking around the code in version 7.39 of the Google Photos app for Android Authority, prolific Android tinkerer AssembleDebug managed to enable a fully redesigned video-editing interface. This new video editor comes with the same types of enhancements we’ve seen in other Material 3 Expressive updates, like clearer iconography and bolder use of accent colors.

The UI update will seemingly come with some new features, as well. The main editing view will prominently sport the option to export a frame from the video; that’s available in Photos’ video editor now, too, but it’s nested along with other tools and isn’t as easy to see.
There’ll be a new option to flip your video horizontally — helpful if you recorded something from a mirrored front-facing camera. Maybe most interestingly, the interface as tested by Android Authority includes the option to add music to your video. There are options to choose from music supplied by Google or to use audio tracks stored locally on your device.
Potentially coming soon
Google hasn’t announced any of these changes, and this new interface isn’t meant for public consumption yet. Android Authority and AssembleDebug enabled these changes by tinkering with code in the Google Photos app. We don’t know when Google plans to roll this updated video editor out officially.
An event to mark the launch of the Pixel 10 series is planned for August 20; it’s possible this new version of the Photos video editing interface is meant to debut on those new devices. Either way, given how complete the interface appears to be, it wouldn’t be surprising to see this new design in the wild soon.
