Spin Master, the company behind the Rubik’s Cube, has revealed that it is working with Cubios Inc. to release a new gaming device called the Rubik’s WOWCube. In essence, the Rubik’s WOWCube is a Rubik’s Cube that can play mobile games like Cut the Rope.

It’s set to release sometime before the end of the year. Once released, it will be an open platform with built-in SDK and developer platform support for people to make their own software for the cube.

What is the Rubik’s WOWCube?

It can even play Space Invaders

Although it has the branding of a Rubik’s cube, the WOWCube isn’t just made for a single puzzle or even a 9-by-9 block. Instead, it’s 2-by-2 and made up of tiny screens that players can rotate around. Images released by Spin Master show that these individual blocks can each launch mobile apps of their own, like a calendar, or be used as part of one game.

Unique versions of retro classic Space Invaders and hit mobile games Cut the Rope and 2048 have been announced. Original games can also be made for the WOWCube too, which is why Spin Master and Cubios are also branding it as a unique gaming platform. They want to make development for the WOWCube quite accessible too, which is why they are including the aforementioned built-in SDK and development platform.

This is technically not Cubios first go-around with this idea, as it previously released a WOWCube that functioned similarly. Cubios now has Spin Master’s backing, though, and Cubios CEO Max Filin voiced his excitement about this second crack at the concept in the press release announcing the WOWCube.

“We’re incredibly excited to bring the Rubik’s WOWCube to a wider audience. The original WOWCube taught us a lot about designing a new way to experience gaming and designing a new platform for developers to build upon. In the two years since we launched the original, we listened to the feedback we received and used it to improve not just the product, but also our approach to how we designed it. This iteration not only implements all our learnings but is also now officially part of the iconic Rubik’s family.”

For now, that’s about all we know about the Rubik’s WOWCube, as a specific release date and price have not been revealed yet. Still, pre-orders are coming soon, and the plan is to release it sometime in late 2025. I’m certainly interested in getting my hands on it and seeing whether it’s a glorified Android device with some extra steps or a truly creative new platform that makes me rethink how to play some mobile classics.
