While Samsung’s first tri-folding phone did not make an appearance alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7, the company has confirmed its plan to launch the device later this year. Early leaks have given us an idea about the device’s form factor, with one report suggesting Samsung could market its tri-folding device as the Galaxy G Fold. But if Samsung’s latest trademark is anything to go by, it could market the device under the Galaxy Z branding itself.

Samsung sells its flagship devices under the Galaxy S moniker, while keeping the Z lineup reserved for its book-style and flip foldables. Considering Samsung’s upcoming tri-folding phone is also a foldable, it makes sense for the company to launch it under the existing Galaxy Z branding.

GalaxyClub reports that Samsung registered a trademark for the “Galaxy Z Trifold” in South Korea earlier this week. The name itself makes it clear that the device will be a tri-folding one. However, the trademark does not mean that Samsung has finalized the “Z Trifold” name for its tri-folding phone. It could stick to this name in its home market while selling the device under a different moniker in China.

Much like the Galaxy Z Fold SE from last year, the tri-folding phone is likely headed for a limited release, with Samsung only producing limited quantities. Add in a possibly steep pricing, and the company is unlikely to market the device heavily. Plus, as with the original Galaxy Fold, Samsung could always make slight branding tweaks to its tri-folding device lineup when it decides to take it mainstream.

Z Trifold internal development is going on track

The report also confirms that internal development of the device — codenamed Q7M — is making steady progress. So, it should be on track for a release later this year.

Reports suggest the Galaxy Z Trifold will sport a titanium chassis with a Snapdragon chipset. It will also seemingly use upgraded, lighter titanium hinges — as seen on the Galaxy Z Fold 7 — to reduce its overall footprint and improve rigidity. The device should share many other aspects with Samsung’s newest book-style foldable, including the camera setup.
