Samsung officially unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold 7 at its Galaxy Unpacked event in New York on July 9, 2025. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is a generational upgrade from its predecessor, debuting as Samsung’s thinnest foldable yet (and the thinnest foldable phone currently available in the US).

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 packs other upgrades too, like a larger 6.5-inch cover screen and a bigger 8.0-inch inner display. However, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 still carries the same 4,400 mAh battery found in the now-four-year-old Galaxy Z Fold 3 from 2021. And now, Samsung has explained why a bigger battery didn’t make the cut.

Folks over at SamMobile reached out to Samsung to ask why the Galaxy Z Fold 7 didn’t get a larger battery, especially since the Galaxy Z Flip 7, which is also thinner than its predecessor, received a bump up to 4,300 mAh.

Samsung responded that a larger battery is what “most” Galaxy Z Flip users had been asking for. In contrast, with the Galaxy Z Fold 7, the company focused on other priorities, like improved cameras, a thinner build, and a wider cover screen.

No battery gains on the Galaxy Z Fold 7, and Samsung says that’s intentional

Honestly, that feels like a weak justification. A larger battery has also been a top request from Galaxy Fold users for years, but it seems Samsung couldn’t squeeze in a bigger cell without compromising the thinner form factor. Sure, the design improvements are much appreciated, but it’s not like a bigger battery wouldn’t have been just as welcome.

That said, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 does help Samsung catch up with foldable rivals like the Oppo Find N5 and Honor Magic V5, especially with its slimmer design — something Samsung had been lagging behind on. But unless the company adopts new battery tech, like silicon-carbon cells, fitting in more capacity may continue to be a challenge.

Thankfully, Samsung didn’t reduce battery capacity just to achieve a thinner design, but even so, a slightly larger battery would’ve been a meaningful improvement.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is a generational upgrade. It’s the thinnest and lightest in the series to date, powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy processor and featuring a 200MP pro-grade camera. With an improved, durable Armor FlexHinge and Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2, the device boasts a wider 6.5-inch cover screen and unfolds into a stunning 8.0-inch main display.
