Gmail is perhaps the most popular email service in the world, but that doesn’t mean it’s a one-size-fits-all email client. For critics like many of us at Android Police, one way to improve it will be to enhance existing features or add what’s been missing. Fortunately for users, Google is doing both to make it better, and its newest effort comes in the form of a new feature that many of you may have been waiting for.
The new feature wants to declutter your inbox and save you from emails that you no longer want. Google has been offering tools for this specific purpose for years, but the newest one is perhaps the best, at least on paper, and, more importantly, the simplest to use. That’s because the new “Manage subscriptions” in Gmail is just a tap away.
What’s Gmail’s new Manage subscriptions feature?
As stated by Google in its official blog post, the Manage subscriptions feature will let you manage all your subscription emails from a single place. This means you can now use it to view the list of email subscriptions you’ve signed up for, alongside the number of emails that you received recently from each one of them.
On the right side of the Manage subscriptions view, there is also a button that you can tap to quickly unsubscribe from an unwanted sender. They can be anything, from daily deal alerts to weekly newsletters to promotional emails from retailers. Once you tap to unsubscribe, Google will send an unsubscribe request to the sender, and it might take the sender a few days to stop messaging you.
However, this isn’t a surprising addition from Google. In fact, the Mountain View tech giant is known to be working on this for several months. About a year ago, several Gmail users posted on Reddit (1,2) claiming that they received the Manage subscriptions view feature, but unfortunately for them, tapping it didn’t load anything and only returned a blank space. But that should no longer be the case, as the company has officially announced it.
Based on Google’s demo of the feature, this is one of Gmail’s simplest features. All you’ll have to do is tap the navigation bar in the top left corner of the Gmail app and scroll to the bottom to find the Manage subscriptions option. It appears right below the option for Trash. If you don’t see the feature yet, give it a few days.
