Using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) while browsing the web can help you surf anonymously. Other people use them to spoof their location to unlock features that may be out of reach in their region. Whatever the case, VPNs are useful tools, and iOS developer Snail wants to make your jailbroken iPhone’s VPN handling more intelligent.
Say hello to a new jailbreak tweak called AutoVPN, which promises to intelligently enable or disable your favorite VPN connection based on specific scenarios that you subject your device to. This might mean using a VPN when connected to specific Wi-Fi networks, or when launching a specific app. Both cases can help improve your privacy, ensuring that sensitive traffic only gets sent through a secure connection.
In addition to the above, AutoVPN also upgrades the Status Bar’s VPN indicator by replacing the normal “VPN” indicator with an elegant indicator dot. You can choose the floor of this dot and more from the AutoVPN preference pane that you’ll find in the Settings app post-installation:
Among the things that you can do here are:
- Toggle AutoVPN on or off on demand
- Enable or disable the new VPN Status Bar indicator
- Choose a new color for the new VPN Status Bar indicator
- Enabling hiding the original VPN icon from the Status Bar
- Auto-launch VPN after respringing your device
- Disable AutoVPN for specific Wi-Fi networks that you’ve previously connected to
- Select apps that the VPN will be turned off for
- Respring your device to save any changes you’ve made
- Reset all options to their defaults
