Speaking at Tech Outbound & My Ship Shape Challenge

Speaking

I’m excited and humbled to be speaking at Tech Outbound this summer. This is a unique training event that puts speakers and attendees in close quarters for an entire week. We learn together, we live together and, yes, we have a little fun together. Most importantly, we build personal and professional connections that will last a lifetime.

Tech Outbound

This time I will be delivering 3 sessions. The first session is about using SentryOne to move from being reactive to proactive. Being stuck in firefighting mode is no fun, and we all know that the very best data pros tend to seem nearly invisible. Sometimes the best way to have a real impact at work is to go from hero to zero!

Invisible man

The second is a deep dive into using SentryOne tools to automate tasks. I’m excited for the chance to demonstrate the addition of the Execute PowerShell action to the SentryOne platform. This one addition has opened up an entire world of possibilities, and I intend to bring everyone at Tech Outbound into that world with me.

For the third session, I will be covering the top 10 most popular SQL Server wait types, as recorded by our Wait Type visualization that is hosted on pages of the SQLskills waits catalog. I’ll show the stats for each type, explain what causes it and, where possible, provide a demo of it. Then we’ll discuss what one should or should not do in order to reduce that wait type on your servers.

Ship Shape Challenge

In addition to speaking, and since I know about the trip early enough this year, I am also taking the opportunity to make some progess on personal goals. I’ve decided that I really want to be in better physical shape for this trip and, with my doctor’s blessing, I have set a goal to lose 56 pounds of unhealthy body mass by the time we set sail on August 4th.

Mountain hike

I’m starting on March 5th, and I will be coming here once a month to provide updates. I’ll be tracking using MyFitnessPal as well, and if anyone wants to join me, you can find me listed as TheSadPanda.

Sad

Last, but certainly not least, if I do meet my Ship Shape goal, I will be bringing some special swag for all the Tech Outbound speakers and students.

I certainly hope to see as many of you there as possible, and I will be back in a month with my first update!

Until next time,
-JRH
