Whether it’s jailbreaking, exploiting iPhones and iPads with the latest hacks and customizations, or some other facet of iPhone ownership that lets us take more control over our devices from Apple, your friends at iDB are here to cover it.
In this roundup, we’ll go over everything we showed you from this past week to make sure you don’t miss any exciting news that we’ve shared. This roundup will showcase news from Monday, October 2nd through Sunday, October 8th.
Important stuff from this week
Gala iPhone 4 jailbreak released
Yes, you read that right. An iPhone 4 jailbreak called gala has been released for iOS 4.0 in 2023, and it’s more than just a jailbreak.
It comes complete with a 6-part piece of documentation that is fully-interactive and perfect for a prospective jailbreak tweak developer who might want to learn more about jailbreaking.
You can learn more about gala and its intentions in our full news post.
PureKFD v4.0 released
PureKFD, the all-in-one package manager for the MacDirtyCow & KFD exploits and that supports add-ons from Misaka and Picasso in addition to PureKFD, was updated to version 4.0 this past week with what’s being described as a “complete overhaul.”
The update includes not only a smoother user experience, but also the addition of comfort features such as 3D Touch/Haptic Touch gestures and more.
You can learn more about the latest changes in the PureKFD version 4.0 update in our full news post.
RootHide Patcher Released
The RootHide Team released its much anticipated RootHide Patcher utility on Wednesday to make it possible to convert ordinary jailbreak tweaks into RootHide-compatible jailbreak tweaks.
The utility will be hit-or-miss depending on the jailbreak tweak, but it can help fast-track compatibility for those tweaks whose developers are no longer as active as they used to be.
You can learn more about the new RootHide Patcher utility in our full news post.
Downgrading from iOS 17 to iOS 16 no longer possible
On devices capable of running iOS or iPadOS 16 that have already upgraded to iOS or iPadOS 17, it is now no longer possible to downgrade as Apple has officially stopped signing iOS & iPadOS 16.6.1.
This means that should any jailbreak release for iOS & iPadOS 16.6.1, those who updated to iOS & iPadOS 17 will need to go without. On the other hand, it is still possible to use DelayOTA to upgrade to iOS or iPadOS 16.6.1 from an earlier firmware.
You can learn more about this change in our full news post.
Apple Unsigns iOS 17.0 & 17.0.1
Apple officially stopped signing iOS & iPadOS 17.0 and 17.0.1 this week in a move that marks the company’s first unsigning of any version of iOS 17 since the major firmware upgrade dropped in September.
In doing so, anyone who upgraded to a version newer than iOS or iPadOS 17.0.1 can no longer downgrade to those unsigned versions.
You can learn more about the impacts of this news in our full post.
Jailbreakable iPadOS 17 device list
We have made a list of the small subset of iPads that can be jailbroken on iPadOS 17 with the palera1n Nightly beta jailbreak tool.
Learn more about it in our full news post.
Will we see a TrollStore 2?
TrollStore lead developer Lars Fröder on Monday confirmed that a bug patched in iOS & iPadOS 16.7 and 17.0.1 might have the same properties and capabilities as the CoreTrust bug currently being exploited by TrollStore to allow perma-signing of sideloaded apps.
The new bug hasn’t been published yet, but if it is, there’s a distinct possibility that a next-generation TrollStore could be created.
You can learn more about what was said about this bug and what this could mean for the jailbreak community in our full news post.
Linus Henze publishes Fugu15 Rootful Edition
Linus Henze left us with a bombshell on Wednesday after publishing to GitHub his work on a working rootful edition of his Fugu15 developer jailbreak for iOS & iPadOS 15.0-15.4.1.
In addition to making this public, Henze went out with a bang by archiving his GitHub repository in a move that many suspect is his way of exiting iPhone jailbreaking — albeit unconfirmed.
You can learn more about the news surrounding Fugu15 Rootful Edition in our full news post.
Dopamine v2 discussed
Dopamine lead developer Lars Fröder shared his thoughts about Linus Henze’s new Fugu15 Rootful Edition, also using his time to comment about the next major update to Dopamine dubbed version 2.0.
From what we can gather, this update won’t be out for a while, but should greatly improve the maintainability of the jailbreak and perhaps even add support for older devices.
You can learn more about what Fröder had to say in our full news post.
ActionButtonEnabler
The new ActionButtonEnabler jailbreak tweak for older Home Button-equipped iPads running iPadOS 17 can rebrand the Home Button’s chief purpose to mimic that of the iPhone 15 Pro’s new Action Button.
It’s worth noting that the only iPads that can currently be jailbroken on iPadOS 17 are those that are vulnerable to the checkm8 exploit — in other words, A11 and below via the palera1n jailbreak.
You can learn more about ActionButtonEnabler and how you can get and use it in our full review post.
iOS 17.0.3 released
Apple released iOS & iPadOS 17.0.3 on Wednesday to address bugs in the new operating system and to address overheating issues with the CPU in the iPhone 15 Pro models.
You can learn more about the latest update in our full news post.
