In case you haven’t been following along, the palera1n jailbreak is powered by the unpatchable checkm8 bootrom exploit and has officially supported iOS & iPadOS 15 and 16 on all A11 and older devices since being released.
More recently, however, we mentioned how palera1n Nightly — the nightly beta build version of palera1n — supported iPadOS 17 on a small subset of older iPads, and we’re excited to share this Thursday morning that the palera1n team has officially expanded that support to the mainline public release.
Announced via the palera1n team on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) during the wee hours of the night, palera1n 2.0.0 beta 8 is now officially available to the masses and introduces the following changes:
What’s new
Highlighted changes
– Support for iPadOS 17.0-17.1 (and potentially higher)
– Drop support for rootful jailbreak on iPadOS 17.0-17.1 in push to go rootless
– Loader now has limited json functionality, which now we can change the configuration on where the loader would download from without needing a new betaLoader / Helper
– Downloaded content is now in /tmp/ due to potential permission issues from other jailbreaks
– Changes some loader internals to accommodate for json loading changes, this includes having some optimizations for the interface
– Cleanup of useless files/directories being created that were there for development purposes
– Upon using —force revert, —clean-fakefs, and “Revert Install,” it now deletes leftover Zebra files
– Helper will no longer try to write to Zebra’s sources.list to add palera1n’s default repositories, rather now you ahold use Zebra’s built-in community sources page for default repositoriesCLI
– Update checkra1n version to 0.1337.2
– Log info will no longer show the user their device UDID when going into recovery mode, unless the user has specified having double verbose in their arguments (-vv)
From what we can gather, there have been some changes to the jailbreak files as well, but detailed information about that can be found on the project’s GitHub page.
It’s worth noting that anyone jailbreaking iPadOS 17.0-17.1 will need to use Procursus (1900) bootstrap, at least until the 2000 bootstrap is ready for the general public. When ready, the palera1n team will take the necessary actions.
There are no palera1n jailbreakable iPhones that run iOS 17 because Apple dropped support for the iPhone X ending with iOS 16, so this newfangled device and firmware support applies only to iPads, including the following:
- iPad (6th generation) (A10 chip)
- iPad (7th generation) (A10 chip)
- iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2nd generation) (A10X chip)
- iPad Pro 10.5-inch (A10X chip)
It’s worth noting that palera1n is currently the only jailbreak tool available for iOS & iPadOS 16 and 17 devices, but it remains limited to A11 chip-equipped devices and older. Making jailbreaks for newer devices will require a PPL bypass to use with the existing kfd exploit, and one hasn’t been publicly released yet.
Existing palera1n users are advised to use the latest version to ensure that they’re taking advantage of the latest bug fixes and improvements. You can simply reboot your device and re-run the latest version of palera1n over your existing installation.
If you have never used palera1n before, and you’re interested in getting started, then you can follow the steps outlined in our detailed tutorial to give it a try.
Please note that palera1n continues to be a beta jailbreak, and the team reaffirmed that it will never be a perfect jailbreak, but is committed if trying to fix issues as fast as possible.
