Speaking in May-June: Boston, San Diego, Atlanta, and Nashville

Whilst On the Road

I’ve been traveling heavily to speak at SQL Server events for the last few months and had a great time at recent stops such as Colorado Springs, a three-city tour in Oregon, and Philadelphia. I learned some interesting things about Oregon while visiting there, since it was my first trip in which I spent a considerable time there.

The most important thing I learned is the old game Oregon Trail is wrong! No one dies of dysentery in Oregon unless they want to die of dysentery. Second, they allow 18-wheelers with not just one or two trailers, but up to THREE trailers. My mouth hung open wide enough to catch flies and my eyed gaped wide when one of these behemoths came flying past on the interstate while I was toodling* along in an unfamiliar rental car. (*Footnote: This denotes that I always travel at appropriate highway speeds, n’est pas?) Finally, despite the rain, Oregon possesses a lustrous and lush beauty between the snow-peaked Cascade Mountains to the rolling, verdant valleys. Just gorgeous!

Another lesson learned while on the road, Philadelphians are rather absolute in terms of their favorite maker of Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches. I had one of the best cheesesteaks of my life just a couple blocks from our conference space and yet all of the locals insisted I could get an even better cheesesteak at their favorite joint. I don’t doubt that better cheesesteaks exists. But I’ll need to take out another life insurance policy before I eat one, because what I had (at Steve’s Prince of Steaks, in case you’re interested) was good enough to send me to heaven. It was also big enough that I didn’t eat for 28 hours afterwards.

Other Events on the Horizon

May 19, 2018
SQLSaturday #733 – Atlanta, GA
SQLSaturday is a free training event for Microsoft Data Platform professionals and those wanting to learn about SQL Server, Business Intelligence and Analytics. Now keep in mind that SQL Saturday Atlanta is HUGE! It’s huge in attendance. It is huge in vendor support. And it is huge in the number of top-quality, internationally renown speakers. Keep in mind that private training from the majority of the event speakers would probably cost around $500+/day. But this event is 100% FREE. (There’s typically a nominal fee to cover lunch, but there’s zero cost for the training). I’ll be speaking on “Exploring SQL Server’s Plan Cache” at the 10:30 – 11:30 AM slot. This event will be held on May 19, 2018 at Gwinnett Technical College – Alpharetta, 2875 Old Milton Pkwy, Atlanta, Georgia, 30009, United States.

Jun 2, 2018
Music City Data – Nashville, TN
This is the inaugural year for the Music City Data (MCD) conference, a part of the larger Music City Tech event. This 1200+ person event joins three distinct conferences (MCD, plus Music City Code and Music City Agile) over three days on the beautiful campus of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. MCD focuses on databases, big data trends, data science, modern data management, self-service business intelligence, and machine learning. Tickets for MCD are $120 for the Saturday or $400 for the entire three days of all three conferences. Join me along with a variety of expert speakers as we cover a wide range of topics for DBAs, Developers, Business Analysts, and Data Scientists. Hope to see you there! And if you’re coming, drop me a note so we can shake hands in person. =^D

Jun 9, 2018
SQLSaturday #742 – Cork, Ireland
SQLSaturday is a free training event for Microsoft Data Platform professionals and those wanting to learn about SQL Server, Business Intelligence and Analytics. This event will be held on Jun 09 2018 at University College Cork, Western Gateway, Western Road, Cork, Cork, County Cork, T12 XF62, Ireland. Our event building is home to the University Computer Science department and Ignition program and has state of the art facilities for presenters and attendees alike. The event has four tracks, so there will be plenty of excellent sessions for everyone to enjoy and learn from. I’ll present a session on my “End-to-End Troubleshooting Checklist for Microsoft SQL Server” which teaches you my systematic approach to diagnosing and resolving performance problems on SQL Server.

In addition, I’ll be teaching a full-day class on Friday, June 8th before the SQL Saturday. The class is entitled “50 Things All SQL Server Developers Need to Know“. I assure you that you will learn more than 50 things, in fact, probably enough about SQL Server coding best practices to melt your brain. On a side note, this is not a free event. However, if you attend, I’ll be giving a gift of SentryOne software of much greater value than the registration fee*! (*Footnote: Terms and conditions apply). I hope to see you there in Ol’ Eire!

Attendees can get 20% off registration for the pre-conference seminar using code SENTRYONE.

In the meantime, let’s connect on social media. Details below. Cheers!
