I’ve got three interesting and important webinars queued up for you in January 2017. The webinars cover two topics that are very hot these days: Azure Data Platform architecture (in two parts) and Docker Containers on Windows.

So Much Azure. So Many Questions.

While I’m very well-versed in the core relational engine aspects of SQL Server, I have some trouble keeping up with all of the data platform offerings of Azure. Is this the old adage, “You can’t teach on old dog new tricks”? Rather than trying to learn everything about the Azure data platform, it seems sensible to first learn its architectural advantages. That means we’ll focus on what it is (and is not) and the most effective and relevant applications.

What better way to fill in the knowledge gap than to call upon a true expert, Gavin Payne? Gavin is the Head of Digital Transformation at Coeo, a UK-based Microsoft Gold Partner and one of our tightest partner firms. Coeo provides consulting and managed services for Microsoft data management and analytics technologies. Gavin’s credentials are many; he is both a Microsoft Certified Architect and a Microsoft Certified Master for SQL Server. He spends his days creating new Coeo services that help customers use digital technologies, such as cloud data platforms and advanced analytics solutions. This man knows his stuff.

We ended up with so much good content, we decided to break the session into two parts. Part One, on January 11th, introduces the different cloud services and how they relate to traditional SQL Server services. Then, with Part Two on January 25th, Gavin delves into how these cloud services can then be used with existing on-premises data platforms to create hybrid solutions – something that’s becoming popular with businesses of all sizes. After viewing these webinars, you’ll be able to identify use-cases where the various Azure data platform services will the best method for meeting your IT needs.

What is a Container?

In this session, we’ll explore the technical foundation of containers and the emerging uses of containers with SQL Server. While containers are old hat on Linux, and the only way to reproduce the behavior of multiple instances on a single machine, they offer a variety of benefits on Windows too. For example, they are extremely fast to create, invoke, and run – and they are licensed differently. We’ll also show how the WinDocks solution compares to Microsoft’s and, of course, other technical benefits offered by containers.

Our speaker is Paul Stanton, co-founder of WinDocks, a provider of an independent port of Docker’s open source to Windows. Paul is a former Director at Microsoft involved in early multi-user support for Windows with Citrix, in addition to internetworking initiatives with Cisco, Bay Networks, and Windows NT-based routing. In recent years, Paul was involved in Docker with ActiveState for Cloud Foundry, as well as Red Hat’s OpenShift. Paul’s team at WinDocks is composed of former Microsoft engineers; their solution focus on container support for SQL Server, and supports all editions of SQL Server 2008 and up on Windows 8, Windows 10, Windows Server 2012, and Windows Server 2016.

Will You Join Me?

Bring your questions and curiosity to these upcoming webinars. I hope to see you there! And as always, I’d like to hear if you have any other topics you’d like to see covered in an upcoming webinar.

Cheers!
