Building a Bridge to the Cloud With Azure SQL Database Managed Instance

Are your clients exploring which SQL Server workloads to move to the cloud, but struggling with the scope of “lifting and shifting” all that data? To ease customers’ transitions to Azure, Microsoft has introduced Azure SQL Database Managed Instance, which is essentially a stepping stone to the cloud that retains some of the most essential features of on-premises SQL Server, such as replication. By understanding the specific use cases Managed Instance targets, you can help your customers map an optimal path to the cloud.

Becoming generally available on October 1, 2018, Managed Instance delivers a fully managed option for those who are looking for a hybrid solution between cloud-based and on-premises SQL Server deployments. In advance of the Azure SQL Database Managed Instance release to Public Preview, SentryOne announced monitoring support for Managed Instance in SQL Sentry, so companies can gather actionable performance metrics on SQL Servers running on Managed Instance.

Moving to Managed Instance is a great option for organizations that want to transition some workloads to the cloud without the cost and time commitments of a wholesale move to the cloud—and without giving up some of the features of on-premises SQL Server. Managed Instance is especially appealing to companies with massive data estates and complicated data architecture.

In a recent blog post on SQLPerformance.com, Tim Radney wrote an in-depth analysis on the differences between Managed Instance, on-premises SQL Server, and Azure SQL DB. In a separate blog post on the SentryOne team blog, John Martin announced the new features in SQL Sentry that will support Azure SQL Database Managed Instance. We’re excited to share this information with the SentryOne Global Partner Network, so you can continue to meet your clients where they are in their cloud migration journey.
