Jailbreak Tweak Claims to Improve iDevice Network Throughput Speeds

Italian iDevice blog, iPhoneItalia, pointed to a new Cydia tweak this morning. After some handy Google Translating work, it appears that TCP optimizer is aimed at improving network throughput speeds.

This would improve performance of YouTube and other applications. Although I don’t have any beef with the way YouTube is currently running, any tweak that advertises noticeable speed improvements is worth a shot…

TCP optimizer is pretty barebones, with no home screen icon or place in the Settings app. So what exactly is this tweak supposed to do?

“This package changes some TCP parameters on boot that result in faster network throughput (for me). I suspect it will improve speeds for others as well. My main goal was reducing YouTube stutters and delays.”

The developer also states that this tweak is only meant for Wi-Fi and won’t improve 3G performance. He also warns that Apple TV owners connected via an ethernet cable should stay away.

I tried the tweak across multiple iDevices, running before and after speed tests. On the iPad, the YouTube video load time was noticeably quicker, but I didn’t see it in any of the other devices. I also didn’t notice any real difference in network speed.

TCP optimizer is a free download if you want to check it out for yourself. It’s not in the default repositories though, so you’ll have to add http://cydia.pushfix.info/ to your list of Cydia sources. Once installed, just do a Cydia search to find it quickly.

Have you tried TCP optimizer? Did you notice a difference in YouTube or other improvements?
