A new free jailbreak tweak dubbed WakeTunes by iOS developer Youssef Mikhail temporarily wakes your iPhone’s screen every time a song changes on your device.
If you’re like me and you listen to music while your iPhone sits in a dock, then this tweak quickly becomes a welcomed addition to the music listening experience.
When the screen wakes up, you’re taken to the Now Playing interface for a few seconds. Afterward, the device subtly falls back asleep as the music continues.
Within the short amount of time that the screen wakes up, you can glance at information about the song, such as the author and album artwork. This is useful for music discovery when you hear something you like on a radio station or curated playlist that you’re unfamiliar with.
Because the tweak wakes your locked device when the music changes, you’ll only notice different behavior when your display is asleep. With that in mind, the tweak doesn’t impact device behavior when it’s already awake and in use; even when music is playing.
WakeTunes adds a preferences pane to the Settings app where you can configure a couple of options:
Here, you can:
- Enable or disable the tweak
- Allow the tweak to function while Low Power Mode is turned on
A respring button is included at the bottom of the page so you can save your changes.
You might want to consider keeping the second option turned off for battery longevity reasons. Turning it on will use more battery power, which defeats the purpose of saving power in Low Power Mode.
Not everyone will want their display waking up every time a song changes. It really comes down to personal preference and how you use your device.
If you’re interested in trying WakeTunes, you can download it for free from Cydia’s BigBoss repository. The tweak works with jailbroken iOS 9 and 10 devices and is compatible with music playback from any app.
