How Does APO Work?

The proposed approach first adopts mini-batches of training data to obtain the “gradients” in natural language, which describes a given prompt’s flaws. Then, it edits the prompt toward the opposite semantic direction of the gradient. These steps serve as the expansion component of a wider beam search in the space of prompts, making the task a beam candidate selection problem, thus improving algorithmic efficiency.

Results and Evaluation

To evaluate the effectiveness of APO, the Microsoft research team compared it with three state-of-the-art prompt learning baselines. They were compared on various NLP tasks, including jailbreak detection, hate speech detection, fake news detection, and sarcasm detection. The results showed that APO consistently outperformed other baselines, achieving significant improvements over Monte Carlo (MC) and reinforcement learning (RL) baselines without hyperparameter tuning or model training.
