Some apps are purposely limited in terms of CarPlay availability, generally for the sake of safe driving. This includes video playback apps such as Netflix or YouTube.
While we’ve previously showed you jailbreak tweaks such as CarPlayEnable that remove these restrictions on jailbroken devices, many people don’t jailbreak. That’s what makes a new TrollStore add-on called CarTube for TrollStore by iOS developer Avangelista quite interesting.
This simple add-on, compatible with all devices that support TrollStore (namely iOS & iPadOS 14.0-15.4.1 devices and some 15.5 betas), allows users to search for and watch YouTube videos via the infotainment system in their CarPlay-supported vehicle’s dashboard.
The app you perma-sign looks and feels a lot like YouTube, but isn’t the official YouTube app. It has been modified to not only support CarPlay, but also to block ads and sponsor segments so that you can focus on what matters most to you.
At this time, the app is considered a beta release and may have bugs, but several users in the /r/jailbreak release post have already expressed how well the app works. Currently, the only pitfall would be that you can’t operate the app with the car’s own touchscreen.
It’s worth noting that laws in many jurisdictions forbid drivers from watching videos while operating a motor vehicle, but you should still be able to use this feature in a parked car that isn’t in motion. We strongly advise anyone who uses this app to comply with their local laws and regulations. You have been warned.
If you’re interested in seeing what CarTube for TrollStore is all about, then you can download it for free from the developer’s GitHub page. It’s worth noting that a jailbreak isn’t required to use TrollStore to perma-sign this app, but you will need to be using a supported firmware version to use TrollStore, as we mentioned earlier.
